There is, and has been for a while,a very unstable Arctic air mass which normally stays in place up there. But in recent times that cold-air has become wobbly b/c of the approaching warmer air which causes the wobbly jet stream to fluctuate where the jet stream normally acts like a 'fence' to keep the arctic air from becoming wobbly (unstable). Then what we end up with is a yo-yo effect of extreme weather patterns seen around the world.
Nothing about the weather today is normal.
