Ironside~~Anyone watching?

I like Blair Underwood.........I am trying to understand why he is in a wheelchair and are you seeing that his partner was a bad guy and when he was running after the bad guy his partner shot him instead? I watched him today talk about the show but I did not know why the character is in a wheelchair. Thank you for letting me know.
