Re: Irma Is Downgraded To a Cat 4

the mayor and gov say there is transportation, buses to get to the shelters and pets are allowed

the stranded airport folks that can't get out. the airports don't know what to do with them except to say they cannot sleep there. one international guy said he was told there was a terminal  they could stay at, but the risk of windows = too much glass flying.  so that plan was abandoned.  another couple from Argentina came to Miami to pick up the bride-to-be's wedding gown. now they are stuck in the airport with no plan.

Looks like in most places schools are being used as shelters and most are already full.  Given that choice I might decide to make preparations and ride it out also.

I just saw a Rockport, Texas survivor on the news and he said Harvey's destruction was like a bomb going off in parts of his city. Neighborhoods look like  war zones where bombs were dropped.

I know you all have been worried sick about Richard Branson who chose to hunker down in a cement bunker on his private island which is part of the Virgin Islands chain.  Here's what he had to say afterwards.   I'm not sure what the British Red Cross has to do with all of this.

@Kachina624, Neker Island is part of the British Virgin Islands.  Since Branson is a British citizen it would be logical for him to donate to the British Red Cross.

If I did not have enough money to evacuate and was ordered to do so, I would think there would be some kind of assistance to provide transportation and shelter.

The have that covered. There is a number to call and someone will come to get you. They are using many schools as shelters. Evacuating doesn't necessarily mean traveling long distance.

They are trying to get folks out of the areas that will be under water, moving them to higher ground, and into safer buildings. Some are living in mobile homes that will be gone after the storm.

Re: Irma Is Downgraded To a Cat 4

Greetings from south Florida!  I'm reading all the opinions... should loved ones leave or stay?  Irma is a monster.  Those along the coasts have to evacuate due to the storm surge.  Those of us inland have been told to hunker down, and that's what we're doing.

Evacuations usually just mean going to a shelter farther inland.  There's no place to go within a day's drive.... the whole state is involved.  Although, there are enough people trying to get out of Dodge that the freeways are packed.  Then, if you get on the road, you might get stuck without gas somewhere.  People are waiting in gas lines for hours, only to have the station run out of gas before they can fill their tank.

Houses are shuttered.  Supplies have been purchased.  Last minute preparations are being made.  Then, we will wait it out, hoping that the houses hold.  Mine was built in 2001.... It should stand up to a CAT 3.  Not so sure about a CAT 4, but I'm hoping for the best.  I can't go anyplace, anyway.  I have two dogs, who I can't leave.  They're poodles. I'm very allergic to just about anything else, so I can't even go to a hotel that allows pets... there are too many allergens in those rooms for me to stay there without getting sick.

So, I'll be hunkering down, with my 92 year old mother and two furbabies, hoping that the storm keeps pushing farther away from us, but fully aware that this could be very bad.  (And, I saw very bad in the last hurricane.... my mother's next door neighbor died during that one...._)
