Internet on airplanes

Help please. I am flying cross country in a few weeks and want to use my iPad on the plane. The plane has wifi. BUT, last week I flew to Vegas and the plane had wifi. I bought four hours on gogoair so I could use my iPad. Of the four hours, I actually had a connection for about 15 minutes total. It kept dropping and searching for the other three hours and 45 minutes. SO, I don't want to do that again. American Airlines uses the same service. Is there any other way to get internet access in the skies????
