I think when you get to the ;level of professional sports ALL sports are dangerous and ALL players get injured. It is so competitive and they have to perform at such a high level they are constantly straining their bodies to max performance. Same with Olympic athletes. Many years ago I cared for an Olympic skater who was having major back surgery due to the strain he was putting on himself to be competitive. I would have never realized skating could be that difficult.

As a skater I can tell you this. Anyone that has laced up a pair of ice skates, be they figure or hockey skates. It ain't as easy as some can make it look.
Figure skaters and hockey players hit the ice on a pretty regular basis. Hockey players have protection while figure skaters do not, however!
Hockey players have Big men hitting them with their body, figure skaters do not. To me that pretty much equalizes the risk of back injuries. Hitting the ice is harder than hitting asphalt, I know, I have hit both many times.
Few NHL players get through their careers without having back surgery of some kind. I myself have ruptured 3 lumbar discs. One open surgery and 1 less invasive second surgery to remove my L-3 lumbar disc.
It is not so much " the strain" as it is the body's impact with the ice. Either way, skating equals back "strains and injuries.

OP did you see an actual study on this or are you basing this thread on a comment Tom Brady made during an interview where he said football has a 100% injury rate?

In the equestrian field the saying is "it's not if you're going to get hurt, it's when you're going to get hurt".
Jockeys, trainers, barrel riders, stadium jumpers, reining, cutting and oh yeah just galloping out on a trail, everyone gets hurt. It's just a matter of when.

I can agree with this. My front teeth were kicked out by a horse when I was in the third grade. My neck has never been the same either.

I have fractures in my neck and spine, been kicked, bit, trampled, knocked out when a horse swung his head around as I was picking hoofs and clocked me square in the head, training green colts is a nightmare..... yet, I loved it enough to keep on going. Go figure. And I didn't get paid millions of dollars to do it.

@60sgirl, is that a new little puppy in your life that you're using for your avatar? Adorable!
I fell off my bike when I was 20, massive concussion with aphasia, etc., hit the pavement head first. Unconscious on the ambulance ride to the hospital. Chalk marks drawn on the pavement around my body. What made me feel the worst, though, was that they shaved half my hair off, all 22" of it. I looked like a knob when I went back to school that fall. After I recovered fully, a few months later, I haven't had any long-term repercussions. But I definitely don't want another one.

@MaggieMack that little sweetheart is currently in foster care waiting for some medical treatments but I am approved to adopt when all is good. Cute huh?

Hi MaggieMack.
Thank you for your story. Goes to show that doing things like going for a bike ride can be a risk. I had my share of injuries from riding a bike when much younger, worst was a broken nose. Nothing close to what you endured for sure.
Unless a person chooses to live as a recluse, and never venture out of their "safe place", living life is a risk almost everyone is willing to take, some much more than others.
Those that choose to take more risks? Many don't understand others rationalization for doing so. Nowadays if adults do not know the risks? They aren't looking very hard as they are all pretty much out there to be found.
Wasn't quite that easy before the Sports Medicine Era began and many studies began. I unfortunately was far into injuries before the beginning of that era. My experiences with injuries were trial and error, and not a great way to learn.
Thanks for your story, always interesting to read others experiences in their lives. My best to you,
