Insanity regarding S & H

I posted on the jewelry forum a few days ago that I had decided NOT to purchase some earrings (about $138) due to $9.22 in S & H.

I have been really paying attention to S & H costs listed since then. I can figure no rhyme or reason to them. During the night, I was up and had a philosophy show on. For 2 of their big bath gels and lotions, it was like $6.97 in S & H.

Now, these WEIGH a lot more than earrings! Then I thought about INSURANCE on earrings. I saw other jewelry at higher values being LESS than $9.22 for S & H.

Can anyone help out with understanding this? I will buy elsewhere for no S & H charges, and I am NOT paying the gouging amounts on jewelry. It's all I can do to make that choice.
