Re: Income Taxes - Does Anyone Else Do This?

I have always done my own taxes, first on paper and then online. The online software is really easy to use. Well, one year I made a mistake and got a letter from the IRS saying I owed them many thousands of dollars. After I picked myself up off the floor, I found a CPA who recomputed my return. I actually owed $96, a far cry from the thousands the IRS stated in their letter. So even though I resent having to pay someone to do my taxes, i don't ever want to get a letter from the IRS so my CPA files electronically.

I do everything electronically.

My paycheck is electronically deposited.

I pay my bills electronically.

And yes, I file my taxes electronically.

It's so much easier, than trying to keep track of paper that might get damaged, destroyed or lost.

The doom and gloomers, think that there will be dire consequences to doing things electronically.

They think that one day the sky will fall. {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

We use an accountant, who has filed everything electronically for many years. But today I was filling out the organizer, in preparation for handing over the paperwork, and I did see that there was an option to have the taxes filed the old way. I never noticed that before.

No...not going to ask for it.

My accountant filed on paper for years until last year. I don't know if this is true or not, but he said by law now you have to file online. He said he much prefers to do it on paper and now he's obligated to file online. So far, so good. He didn't mess up last years taxes, lol.

Professional preparers have to file electronically. I don't know when or if that will ever apply to those who do their own taxes.

I just mentioned in my post, that my accountant has this option. I don't think they encourage it, but I guess they have to ask...It might depend on what state you live in.

I have a CPA we have been going to for 25 years. He files online, they all do. Maybe you cna request hard copy only for more money, but I haven't heard of it.

I think the full social is not put online. Then the IRS has everything online. So when you send a hard copy, they post it online in their system

Re: Income Taxes - Does Anyone Else Do This?

Our tax papers are an inch thick. They are as thick as a copy of Being and Nothingness, lol! We do request full hard copy after he files electronically for our records. I think there may be an option to get tax papers online and download them. That is an idea.. I am going to ask how much more that service has been costing us. You can have taxes filed the old way, but it costs a lot more for a CPA to do it. You are paying him for his time. And it ain't cheap! But I feel better having him do it. One of my guilty pleasures.

I do remember that last year, one of our non-resident state returns had to be mailed in. They tried to send it electronically, but there was a glitch, so it ended up being mailed the old-fashioned way. yes, it can still be done!

September

We have the CPA file electronically, and he send us the hard copy...with papers we have to sign and send to IRS and State. It is like a page. The taxes go to IRS from CPA computer, but until they receive the signed paper, they are not processed. I think?

Yes, shoekitty, we do the same. In the case last year, the return was sent to the non-resident state (MN), but for some reason, they didn't get our federal attached return, so they assumed we were residents and sent us a letter saying we owed them about $25,000!

It was all cleared up once the accountant snail mailed "everything" to them.

Re: Income Taxes - Does Anyone Else Do This?

It actually takes me a little longer to file online, than to do it on paper. But, I like the fact that I get confirmation numbers and receipts when I file both the state and federal forms online. And, I'm not depending on the USPS to get our forms properly delivered.

I filed our taxes last Saturday, and both State and Federal funds were deposited to our account on Wednesday evening.

"I've been here since October 2006. Wow!"
