I loved roller coasters as a kid but the ones they have now scare me as they appear to jerk the riders neck and I have herniated discs in my neck that I fear would be a problem if my neck was suddenly jerked.

well. I can't even WATCH rides like that, never mind get ON one!
My brother went to the Grand Canyon and stood on a clear platform overlooking the canyon. NOPE! Not doing that either..............

I went to Dubai on business and was given a show-round of a brand new hotel that had one of those outside glass elevators. Had I been alone, I'd rather have used the stairs - even 100 stories - than go in that thing, but I had no choice because someone was giving me a tour and it would have been rude to refuse. I tried to stay away from the edge and not look down.
It's not heights that I have a problem with, it's edges. If heights bothered me, i wouldn't be comfortable looking out of plane windows. What I can't do is drive in the lane nearest the side of a bridge, I have to go in the middle lane and try not to think about it.

When I was in my 30's, I went up 1,100 feet in a hot air balloon and floated over the city and suburbs for almost an hour--in that little 4' x 4' open basket and that fire machine thingy right above my head! I loved it, but I wouldn't do it again if someone paid me--it would have to be a LOT of money!
How I did that, I'll never know because I have a fear of heights, cannot stand going up in an elevator even in a 10 story building, and if I'm up high in a building and get close to a window, my knees go weak. I was in Atlanta with business associates and after dinner, they insisted on going up to the revolving restaurant and bar at the top of Peachtree Plaza (73 stories tall). I'd had a drink or two, so I managed the glass outside elevator by standing with my back to the outside and looking at the building as we went up. After a couple of hours and a couple more drinks, I enjoyed the ride down overlooking the city!
I also got stuck on the eastern shore of Maryland once and couldn't drive my car back across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge! My BIL had a business on the eastern shore so I took it to him and he drove it back across for me!

I feel the same way you do, qualitygal.
I did get stuck on a ride, UPSIDE DOWN, when I was a kid, so maybe that has something to do with it. It was a ride at the old SF Playland At The Beach. We were upside down for at least 10 minutes. I was afraid I'd throw up, what a mess that would have been, throwing up while upside down

It started in 1995 -- when I'm a passenger in a car, on the street or freeway, I go into panic mode. I could drive fairly well on the street -- but when I have to drive on the freeway, which isn't often, I start freaking out. Too many cars, they're driving too fast - I just feel like I'm going to crash. I'm 73 yrs. This all started at age 54 - during menopause. I read that this is common for women.

I've been stuck in very full elevators. TWICE! Awful because I'm claustrophobic.

I don't even have to be stuck. Just riding in a glass elevator bothers me! Towering Inferno anyone?
