Re: In the Future, When There is A Dangerous Cat 5 Storm...

The General Public gets confused when on one hand,

the Governor says 'get out now...your life depends on it' and

on the other hand, the Tampa Mayor calls it a 'glancing blow'.

Next time there's a Cat 5, people will remember the 'glancing blow'.

I've had the news on all day, and from what I've seen so far, and yes, it's still early, it seems that Irma didn't live up to it's apocalyptic hype.

I did not want that to happen.

But next time there really is a dangerous cat 5 hurricane, how many people will listen and heed the call to evacuate?

****************  I WILL!  Even if I didn't think it would kill me....who would want to live in backed up sewage, live wires, no electricity, no phone service, no air conditioning, ambulances that can't get to you if you have an emergency, running out of food, no fresh water, roads blocked and filled with debris, and the list goes on and on.  No thanks!  I would rather error on the side of a flushing toilet, fresh water coming out of a faucet, and help if I needed it. A dry car sure would help, too!!

Have you ever gone to an evacuation center?  Sometimes you have to weigh the options.

Someday, when scientists discover the center of the Universe....some people will be disappointed it is not them.

I would heed the warnings and get out early.  I agree that anything would be better than a big overcrowded shelter.

Stayed with Son and family central Florida. Yesterday we had no power his Step Mother's power came on she was kind enough to invite us. Over night power is back on. My condo had no damage. Son's roof will need replacing. Could have been worse.

"2. Everyone that doesn't evacuate however isn't because they are in denial or being arrogant or ignoring warnings--I have family in Florida (near Tampa) and they were specifically advised to shelter in place as they were not in the evacuation zone and were in sturdy shelters. The reasoning? To free up evacuation routes so those ordered to do so could get out as quickly as possible."

They asked people to leave the keys and south Miami and in low coastal areas.  Very few homes can withstand 130 mph winds and 10 feet of storm surge and that is what we saw moving our way.

They asked people in the other areas to evacuate to

a safe shelter or home.  NOT LEAVE the state!

People know when they live in a vulnerable area.

If they don't, they had warnings on TV 24 hours a day.  There is no excuse for people staying in an unsafe structure.

If they built homes to withstand a Cat 5 hurricane nobody could afford them.

There have only been 5 since they started keeping records,

1932193319612005, and 2007 and now 2017.

They do provide shelters and they are well stocked with cots bedding and food to keep people safe.
