Re: In light of theatre tragedies, will you still go to movies?

NYC Susan...

I have hit jackpots out here that defied astronimical odds...so don't feel like pushing my luck.

Just for giggles I'll give you a great example.  There was a progressive jackpot at one of the casinos out here (Gold Coast) that consisted of 20 machines and the jackpot had reached $10,500.   How I chose the right machine is a mystery but I did and the winning hand required 4 deuces plus a 5th wild card all of which was dealt to me on a re-draw.  I had thrown all the cards away as I had gotten what I considered to be a garbage hand and I won the progressive jackpot on the re-draw.

I'm just glad that most movies are such atrocious duds that I have no interest to going to most any of them.

So right there, that cuts down my risk of being slaughtered in my suspiciously-Junior Mint-scented seat by a movie theater killer.

And at the rate that so much other American entertainment is going, I think we'll all be safer as there won't be much of anything worth doing as to put us in harms way. lol

"Dud summer concert series at Main Street Park this summer, honey. So that's good. Its one more place we can scratch off our list of potential hit sites."

I travel too much much and am too social a person to worry about such things. I mean, I just can't afford to worry about it.

What's the old saying? While you're looking at and worrying about the car coming right at you, its the bus that hits you from behind.

Or something like that.

If one decided to stay away from movie theaters thinking one will dodge a bullet (literally), one can still walk right into a bullet at church, at work, at the mall, at the dry cleaners, at school, on the street, in a McDonalds...or even while sitting on one's couch at home should a stray bullet whiz in or a flash mob of teen home invaders kick in one's front door, guns a'blaze, while you're just sitting there all safe watching Netflix on your 60-inch tv.

In fact, in the end, you might just get shot because you DID avoid the movie theaters and instead - in order to play it safe - you bought that dern 60-inch Sony that the burlgars all want so badly.

I think there are still more home invasions than there are psycho theater killings. So one does have to ask what it is one is really avoiding not matter what one chooses to do.

Meaning...WE'RE ALL GUNNA DIE!

No. That wasn't my point. lol

Meaning that you can't live in fear because you don't really know what or from where the next thing will happen (or if anything will ever happen at all).

Exactly!!!!

My aunt knew an elderly couple who loved to travel.  But they always went by train or car (which limited where they could go) because the woman was terrified of flying.  So her husband surprised her with a month-long cruise, no flying required.  On the second day, she was walking up some steps and slipped on water, hit her head, and died.  That story taught me so much.

And yes, your SONY tidbit really hit home too.  That's very often how things happen!

Great story!

I'm also often in the "Only a very small percentage of people will have this happen" category too.  I am very often the rare or unusual case.  So I understand what you're saying.  Every time a doctor says, "The vast majority of people won't have this happen", I know that it's a good bet that I WILL have it happen!  Good things and bad things, and not just medical.  Just a few months ago, I won 4 contests in a 3-week period - theater tickets, money, great prizes.  I rarely win contests at all, and yet that happened.  But I see the movie theater situation differently.

I worked in the World Trade Center, and I was of course devastated on and after 9/11.  At a time when people were fearful of being in the city and lots of people fled, I never thought twice about it.  I kept telling everyone that if they knew of somewhere that was totally safe, I wish they'd tell me where it was.  Because nowhere was safe.  Anything can happen anytime and anywhere, and that's as true now as it was then.  I was okay being in the city.  I'm not a particularly brave person and I knew that more terrorism was sure to follow, but I had no fear.  A whole lot of sadness, but no fear.  Living as normal a life as possible was what I chose to do.

As I said, we all should do whatever makes us feel comfortable and safe.

I've only been to a movie theatre twice in the last 12 years or so.  Now doesn't seem like a particularly good time to start going again.

We go all of the time and will keep going. However, I'm more aware of those around me.

Who would have thought - even 15 years ago - we would have to be aware of going out to a movie? Smiley Sad

I do not go often anyway, but if I did, I would go and be aware.

So, my daughter works at the theater, my son worked there, too, and I know the employees are notified immediately of any situations here & elsewhere since there could be copycats waiting around.  Corporate takes precautions seriously because it happened within tragically.

I'll just say I try not to worry.

I do not go out to movies. Are you going to quit riding in motor vehicles? Are you going to run red lights? Probably not, but your chances of meeting tragedy can happen anywhere.

No way will I let events that happen change my way of life. That is the goal of terrorists and some of the "crazies" that are seeking their "minute of fame", all thanks to the unnecessary/irresponsible media coverage. Most of which is not about the victims, but "poor sad life of the perpetrator".

[ Edited ]

There are two theaters in our town, gun free and gun OK.  We bought tickets to the gun free once and did not feel safe.  We only go to the gun OK theatre.

We don't go often as our theater here is not very good, but if we're out of town yes.

I've always been a firm believer that when it's your time to go you will.
