I use a lot of crossbody handbags now, especially when I shop out of my area and am not sure of the neighborhood.

I have a large purse and I always put it in the cart. I was at Costco last Christmas season and when I stopped to talk to a vendor this man grabbed my cart and tried to hurry away with it purse and all. I was not quite as oblivious as he thought and put my hand on the handle to stop him. He apologized and hurried off. It may have been a mistake but I don't really think so.

A friend at work had a daughter who bought her first car and was pumping her first tank of gas all by herself. While the pump was still inserted and gas still flowing, a man jumped into her car and drove off with it. The car had less than 25 miles on it.
The car was never recovered. After I heard about that, I always keep my car locked when I get out of it at a gas station or anywhere else.
Also, back in the 70's my aunt stopped at a red light in the city and a young man jumped into her car and made her drive a few miles, then just got out and walked away. He scared my aunt half to death. She was always such a nervous Nellie, I am surprised she didn't have an accident.
i always keep my car locked while I am driving too. There are too many crazies out there.
I once went to an ATM and the pick up truck driver in front of me was acting weird i.e. Looking back at me and was figgetting. I was so spooked that I never got any cash. I just drove away when my turn came. I noticed that the truck was parked on the lot in a hidden spot and the driver was missing when I left. I always felt that he was waiting for me to get cash, then he was going to rob me while he was on foot. I could be wrong, but I am glad I trusted my judgement.

There are no areas that are 100% safe. Everyone need to be cautious no matter where they live. Please don't have a false sense of security.

When I first started working as a nurse - nights , evenings etc my Dad gave me a policeman's billy club.I kept it beside the driver's seat in every car I ever had & never used it, then after about 25 years one early summer morning I was stopped at a red light in a very bad section of Pittsburgh and a man who was obviously quite high reached in the open window and grabbed the steering wheel and told me he had a gun and I was going to take him down town. Well, No I wasn't! I reached for that billy club and whacked him as hard as I could swing it right in the face. Blood flew everywhere and he staggered back and fell down - I hit the gas and flew out of there as fast as my car would go. Later that morning I called the police station where my BIL was the desk sgt. and he said no one had reported anything and to the best of his knowledge the guy was not dead. That was all I cared about. I was very glad I had that billy club and when I told my Dad I had used it he said he was proud of me. It is still in the car and I would never hesitate to use it if needed. For anyone who doesn't know a policeman's billy club is made of leather and has a lead stick thru the inside so it is very heavy, but is balanced so when you swing it just sorta completes the motion for you -when you hit someone with one they know they were hit. The one I have was my grandfather's - he was a cop during the roaring 20's.

My car has automatic locks. I wear cross body bags but as I get older I just don't feel as safe when I am alone. Time changes everything and not for the better. We need to be more careful about our surrondings.
