@gertrudecloset is quite right in her assessment of the safety of the theatre district and the police presence there. NY is a large city with 5 seperate boroughts with inumerable distinct neighborhoods within each one. According to Forbes, NYC is the 11th safest city in the USA. But people will believe whatever fits their narrative. Crime occurs everywhere and it behooves all of us to be aware of our surroundings and not make ourselves a target, regardless of where we are.
Yepper @reiki604 . Don't let the dignataries come to town either. The United Nations is blocked off by about three miles as the important vehicles come through our streets for the meetings there.

So far this season I've been to The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center (yearly tradition except for 2020), Lion King (relatives in town for thanksgiving) and I'm going to the Met to see Rigoletto on Sunday. I can't wait.
I will also say the theater district is as safe as ever. My husband works in the Times Square area and it has been very busy and full of tourists. However, I certainly understand those that are not from this area being apprehensive.
Ticket sales are also down because of the higher prices of everything, especially restaurants in the area and hotels.

Well, I live in Philly but I do go like going to NYC, especially around the holidays. This year I am staying local again. I agree that Covid and crime have put a damper on big city activities. Inflation has also made travel more costly. You just have to be careful and plan well. As workers have returned, day time safety is increasing and there is a lot more activity.
Tomorrow DH and I are going to see the Nutcracker ballet here in Philly, but we are going to a matinee instead of an evening performance so we are not out too late, and we now drive and park in a lot close by instead of taking public transportation.
Many folks still wear masks in the theaters, so that is good for health concerns.
I agree that the Rockettes show is fabulous and highly recommended!

Neil Diamond leads ‘Sweet Caroline’ sing-along in Broadway musical
Dec. 6, 2022
In New York, theatergoers got a special surprise when Neil Diamond himself led the cast and audience of “A Beautiful Noise: The Neil Diamond Musical” in a sing-along of “Sweet Caroline.”
Neil Diamond, 81, sang at the Broadway opening of his musical Sunday. The musician retired five years before due to a Parkinson’s Diagnosis. Diamond stopped touring in January 2018, but brought the audience to their feet with his rendition of “Caroline” at the Broadhurst Theater, with his wife by his side.
It was a rare public outing for the singer; the rock legend last performed a full concert at The Forum in Los Angeles in August 2017.
Diamond has had more than 70 songs hit the Billboard charts and has sold more than 125 million records. Diamond sold his song catalog to Universal Music in 2012.

@Puppy Lips wrote:I went to see the Musical Grease in NYC years ago, maybe 10 years or so. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed in the production. If I had another reason to be in NYC, I would go to a show. But I will not make a special trip there just to see a show, as it does not seem like a safe place to be anymore.
We have three community theaters very close to us. They all put on very good productions. However, the tickets are a bit pricey, so we don't go too often.
@Puppy LipsNYC is still a Tourist Mecca. Broadway is just as safe now as it has ever been. In terms of Covid restrictions, I believe they have loosened them and many people from all over the world descend on Broadway and other parts of NYC as tourists. Your statement about "safety" is inaccurate.
@gertrudecloset Well I have heard a lot of reports, and seen video, of an increase in crime - thefts, murders, assults on the streets in broad daylight. No broadway show is worth the risks I have heard about. Maybe they are exaggerated, but I would prefer to stay away from NYC.
@Puppy Lips They would like us to believe it's all about perception and not what our eyes are telling us. I'm with you, you couldn't pay me enough to take a trip into NYC
