I don't believe angels are always there to prevent us from dying or being hurt. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they are there to escort us to the next life. They are with us, but it isn't up to them what the outcome is, they are there to protect us if it is to be, or to take us home, if that is to be.

I was just telling my neighbor about this - I pray he will be okay.  I'm mad at all of these young woman who are so inebriated and out and about at 2:00 a.m. and put themselves in that situation!!!  There have been 10 rapes here at Indiana University this year, most of them involve college girls out drinking until they can't stand up and then they head home on foot - DUMB, DUMB, DUMB!  I hope that woman he saved has great appreciation for him putting his life on the line for her stupidity!

I admit that I don't believe in angels.  That's why I believe in people helping each other whenever possible.

@Burnsite

I read your posts and find your opinions very well reasoned.

So, please don't take this as a rant.

I don't believe and I don't think it is negative to give my opinion on this topic.  The OP stated that if you didn't believe, you should now based on this story.

How am I being negative in stating I don't believe?  Negative would be me going full force on some of these comments here.  But since I am RESPECTFUL of your beliefs, even though many are not of my non-beilef, I won't.

I would feel that if there was an angel involved he should not have been shot the first time.

Re: If you don't believe in angels . . .

There are plenty of other possibilities here.

What if an angel took possession of a human body in order to help someone?  What if an angel is not only an ethereal form?  What if angels do not intervene ONLY to prevent harm?  What if angels sometimes cannot intervene?  What if (as mominohio said) angels also exist to escort us to the afterlife/heaven/whatever someone chooses to call it or believe in?  Why do we think we know specifically what angels' duties are?

I'm sure there are plenty of other questions that could be asked and perhaps never answered until we reach the end of physical life.

I respect your opinion and you are entitled to it...it has been my experience that non-believers are more negative people....your post comes across as a bit hostile BTW....

Re: If you don't believe in angels . . .

I don't believe in "angels" per the classic description and I don't really know if OP's example was divine intervention or just dumb luck. All that said, I do know from my own life that there's something at work that's greater than I and that the world is full of mysteries that cannot always be easily explained.

As for why bad things happen to good people, I believe that our misfortunes are caused by bad luck, some are caused by bad people, and some are simply an inevitable consequence of our being human and being mortal, living in a world of inflexible natural laws. And, we learn from each other. The suffering of one can cause growth of strength, empathy, compassion in others.

Re: If you don't believe in angels . . .

On where are the Angels when there is a major tragedy:  if you believe, as I do, and as one poster has so elegantly phrased it: they are there to help you in this world or to escort you into the next ( if you believe ).

I can vividly remember the wee small hours of the morning on Sept. 11: As a career counselor I was due to be at a large pharmaceutical firm  announcing to certain employees their termination.  As a professional who has  been involved with this type activity for years, I was ready for the 6 AM meetings.  However, I could not sleep and was walking through the house and sensed an unusual tremendous spiritual energy:  it may have been the army of angels readying themselves for the souls they would escort from the WTC later that morning.

@biancardi, I did not exhort anyone to believe in angels. My opening statement was that "you might start believing in them" after hearing this story, just because I thought it was rather a miraculous thing that the Good Samaritan's life was spared. It is not my mission in this life to convert anyone to believing what I believe. Not all of my friends believe, and I don't love them any less. Faith is a door that must be freely entered. I was just sticking my toe in to let a little bit of light on the other side shine through.
