I've heard and seen many times that these huge demonstrations everywhere definitely did not...did not...help the spread of the virus.
These people come from everywhere shoulder to shoulder and then they eventually leave and go home...(wherever that is).
So, that's my reason for posting this. I hope I've stayed on the subject matter.
@Annabellethecat66 Depends if you are talking about the protests a few weeks ago where most people wore masks. At least that's what I saw on tv. Now the people destroying the city, using bats, pipes, whatever, I didn't see many masks there. They are the troublemakers that need to be arrested and will cause more to get the virus. There is a big difference from what I saw.

I watched a news report showing that European countries started immediately in late March to prepare for the reopening of their schools in September by allocating funds for PPE, plexiglass partitions, more classrooms to accomodate social distancing and testing, tracing to prevent another surge. Teachers were being instructed in new methods to adjust to the changes, mental health professionals were preparing specialized curricula to help the children affected negatively by the pandemic etc. etc.
We have done none of this. Schools are on their own, told to figure it out without federal resources and our children are the new guinea pigs in this mess. This is unconscionable and makes us look like a third world country. We have international friends who are stunned and confused. DH said to me, “i must have slept through it. When did this great country turn into the Beverly Hillbillys?”
Others countries aren't having the massive protests we are. This is world wide thing all the media cares to focus on is how we are doing. I don't believe all other countries are doing great.

Sad but reality. Nobody should be expected to or made feel guilty to patronize local businesses and jeopardize their health. Anyone who is a business owner is aware that a business could fail anytime and they are just chancing it all the time. I have seen many businesses not opening because they do not want the hassle of dealing with the "no maskers"!! Those are the ones to blame as well as businesses who do not follow the guidelines!!

@Annabellethecat66 ,Here in NYC those people protesting and exercising their constitutional 1st amendment rights, for the most part, were all wearing masks. There has been no uptick in the disease positivity rate or the hospitzation rate as a result of those demonstrations. We get daily updates in all the numbers from both the governor and the mayor. My poor BFF lives a couple of blocks from the route the protesters took every night and complained about the noise, nothing else. No uptick in her area either.

There seems to be a faction that wants to pin everything on protests. First, please be sure to distinguish between protesting and rioting. They are bunched together by some for reasons that I won't go into.
It seems that most of what drove this surge we are in dates back to a couple of holiday weekends, areas opening up (apparently too soon), and people resisting (or should I say "protesting") the very reasonable safety precautions advised.
Was there any uptick from any of the earlier protests? Probably some cases. But it in no way explains the totals we're seeing.
Like so much of what we're seeing, it is a very covenient target and deflection.
But @Annabellethecat66none of this is really on topic here.

OK, so did you people not hear about the many groups of people who were having Virus parties.
Large groups would me at someone's house, apt or whatever.
Money would be put up front and the person who had the party and had the most people who got the virus won the pot of money.
I saw on my TV quite a few people who were not wearing masks. Reporters commented that they didn't have on masks. This was a few weeks ago.
I see all of those idiots who are burning stuff down.
They aren't worth using breath on.
Actually, the one's I see doing the burning, etc are wearing masks to cover up their faces so as to not be recognized.
I feel sorry for the people who live in those areas.....totally ignored by the people who should care to keep things safe.
I'm glad I live in PoDunk Virginia on the outskirts....still country...pickup trucks that do the job, people who work hard, grow lots of their own food, do a lot of work on their own houses. Like much of the country used to be.

Well, I can only say that there are loads of mainstream reputable articles which discuss in depth how other countries have handled this; some better than others. But universally, those who have had the greatest success were those who took the once in a hundred years pandemic seriously at the get go and had a unified national strategy aimed at flattening the curve. They understood that their economies and the social fabric of their society would only come back if the health crisis was addressed first.
We wasted so much time with arguments about what to call it, this being the same as seasonal flu, there are more car accidents, drownings etc. mask wearing is a violation of civil liberties, PPE shortages, conspiracy theories etc etc. Then most of the states opened quickly in violation of CDC guidelines and now we are in a never ending circular firing squad.

@Porcelain wrote:If everywhere had actually followed their own reopening plans instead of posting the plans but then going wild and ignoring the specifics and not pulling back as they had said they would, some of these businesses could have been saved. Some. This is a disaster that began out of our control, but our response has turned it into the true tragedy we are in the middle of. Canada and Mexico are looking at us like they don't know us anymore.
MLB can't even protect its own players from Covid and we are about to have school children exposed in schools across the country, to bring it back home to their families just like they bring home ear infections and colds and "the crud" we are all familiar with. So the worst is nowhere near over. We need to not panic but we do need to prepare as individuals.
No one is coming to save us. I thought at first that of course the authorities would help with such a crucial and important disaster because, if nothing else, it would be in their interests financially to prevent people from catching a pandemic disease. I thought it would be obvious to even the most cold of them that Covid spread wide would destroy the economy and hurt their pocketbooks.
I was wrong. I feel awful I was so wrong. I told people to just hold on and that it would be okay. We have to hold on as individuals and we have to be okay emotionally. We can be strong and okay emotionally. But externally, no we are not going to be okay. Prioritize what is most important to you and hold onto it.
Thank you for stating the obvious. Why anyone feels one person should have been in control is ludicrous. While no fan, it's just a cheap shot at the blame game. Our Governors (ALL OF THEM) were given the task at hand to reopen their states incrementally as they met benchmarks set forth by the CDC. Did they do that? No.
@magicmoodz, but yet, you are blaming the governors. Yes, the CDC originally had benchmarks, but they were not at all emphasized, rarely even mentioned.
I would so welcome a strong, cohesive, and unwavering national response based on science that governors then feel the need to follow. Mixed messages don't cut it.
After all, this is a national crisis akin to war.
I am blaming the governors because they were given the mandate. It is their job! Furthermore, should Alaska with 22 total deaths be held to the same stringent rules as New York? Not in my world.
As a news junkie, I heard those benchmarks repeated over and over again until I could probably repeat them in my sleep. Where were you?
I know you like to make everything very political in favor of your party, but as someone who leans neither right nor left in this country I stand by my convictions and you will not change my mind.

While we have had several businesses shut down for a few weeks because an employee tested positive for covid, most have re opened. I can only think of a few small ones that closed due to the virus. But, we live in a rather rural area.
