I don't have children so this is a non-issue for me, but to comment on the OP's question:

 

Words matter. I would hate it if my husband took me to a jewelry store and told me to pick out what I want.

 

On the other hand, my husband loves to shop. I envision, while out shopping, he would suggest we stop in at a jewelry store. We would have fun sharing our likes/dislikes, trying pieces on and then who knows...we can often create a buying frenzy with one another.

 

But truthfully, I am not even a jewelry person. I have all that I want. I am even considering selling my platinum/white gold/sterling pieces in favor of keeping my preferred yellow gold.
