We have a family member who we have not seen or talked to in many years since their wedding, but recently they sent us a kind of vague announcement to a gala where they are the guests of honor and asked us to save the date. Because we do like them very much, but have just lost touch over the years, we would like to go and support them at this event. I thought that they we're given a certain amount of tickets to distribute to family and friends to fill their table, but turns out we are suppose to pay for them and they are (gulp) $600 per couple. I thought since it was an invitation that we were guests , so maybe I just don't know how black tie affairs like this work. Is this being naive or standard procedure. We would really like to go, but wow, that's a lot of money.
