Reduce livestock production. Eat less meat.

It's going for produce, mostly.

Unfortunately livestock needs more water than anything....for the alfalfa, feed, pastures, as well as water for the animal, water to manufacture the meat, etc.etc.....so, so, so much more than produce.

Not here. CA produces the most produce in the nation and for the nation.

Interesting point though.

It is, and a well known one, but CA is not a state built around cattle or sheep ranching, it's a produce state.

You are exactly right Noel.

Allan Savory disputes this. He was able to show moving large herds of livestock vastly improves grasslands and can even reverse desertification. http://www.ted.com/talks/allan_savory_how_to_green_the_world_s_deserts_and_reverse_climate_change?la...

melfie: Savory has been dismissed by some but there is an excellent presentation by Richard Teague, a range scientist at the Texas A&M - I believe it was in London - that supports Savory.

We can put pipelines all over, but we can't get water to our own? We have more than we need on this side and would love to send it where it's needed. Why can't we?

Not lucrative for oil gazillionaires.

ummm.......that's a negatory lone ranger..........cattle ranching has been a part of Cali since the Spanish Ranch days and STILL goes on.......granted not in SF.......but not all Cali is city...........Tejon Ranch is still in operation here and it's been here forever..........we've got 38 MILLION acres of private and publicly owned rangeland in Cali....with grazing cattle on them....................................................raven

edited to add.............most of the land used for agriculture is going to housing........I seen acre after acre of farmland turn into homes here........can't blame the cows for that

Re: If California needs water........

Until a state law is passed prohibiting the use of swimming pools, pool owners in CA and NV will continue to refill them from evaporation so the pool pump goes on...if the water level is too low, it won't. If this isn't done the pool water will turn green and attract mosquitoes including those that carry the West Nile virus; then you'll really have something to complain about.

It seems you missed the point. Our economy is not built around ranching. It is built around produce. No one said there is no ranching or history of ranching here.

Re: If California needs water........

A lot of the golf courses here in the Tucson area use reclaimed water to keep the courses green. Not that many folks have lawns at their homes here in the desert, but golfers like green grass to play on I guess.

In California we have Mosquito Abatement.........they send drones over areas and look for these pools.......IF you have a pool that's green, you get a notice to fix it.....you don't you get a ticket....................................raven
