I have lost 2 family members to ALS and would support anything that could help find a cure for that disease or any other disease for that matter....keep dumping buckets!

Sorry, but this is one of the I couldn't agree more. It's nuts. dumbest things I've seen in a long time ..... dumping a bucket of cold water on your head is NOT 'supportive".

What a silly idea. {#emotions_dlg.thumbdown}

ALS is a horrible disease that robs a person of their physical and mental abilities in a short period of time. We have a good friend who was diagnosed with ALS last fall. One of his first symptoms was severe muscle weakness in the right arm and hand. He now has very little use of that arm (supports arm/hand with left hand) and physical disabilities have manifested in other areas of his body. He can still communicate but it takes him a long time to form his thoughts. He has lost a fair amount of weight as well.

There is no history of ALS in his family and the doctors do not know why he was stricken with it. He did get a second opinion in a large medical center and they agreed with the initial diagnosis. He is on medications they hope will control the progression of the disease. Meanwhile, he and his family wait. .....

Thanks to everyone who has or will donate to the ALS Association.

I lost my mother to ALS. At the end the only thing she could control was eye movement, one hand and her brain. At the time, the doctors told us that it doesn't affect brain function which is one of the heartbreaks. You can't speak, you can't swallow and your body is paralyzed and your brain is fully aware. Perhaps your friend has multiple diagnosis that includes a type of dementia??

Also, I would be curious about what medications he is on that might help control the progression? I remain in the ALS community and attended a support group for quite awhile. I get the newsletters regularly and have not heard about a tested drug that has shown the ability to slow progression. It has been my prayer for 24 years that there was even a tiny bit of hope for ALS families. I will be thrilled if they have found even a shred of success with a new drug! {#emotions_dlg.sad}

Dumped a bucket of ice water on our son just yesterday. He and his wife both took the challenge and have now challenged six of their friends. ALS is severely underfuunded because of its rarity. But it is becoming more and more prevalent in our military and younger folks. When my mother was diagnosed...neither of us had ever heard of Lou Gehrigs Disease. Now you hear about it more and more.

This morning the donations were almost $6 million. DS did his video last night in our driveway.

What would you suggest to raise money and awareness ?

A lot of people seem to be having fun with it so what's the harm? I heard someone today challenge Joan Rivers. I'd love to see that.

I took the challenge last night in my backyard after both my daughters did it. Also my daughters bonus 10 yr daughter did it. We all survived and feel great that we participated in this wonderful cause. The Nascar drivers are doing it, actors and actresses are doing it. I hope they find a cure for this horrible disease.

Keep the buckets coming!!!!

As long as the ice cubes aren't too large, and seniors should be careful because of meds and heart problems, according to a doc on TV, from what a friend told me yesterday. (Second hand information). Maybe just mildly cold for some folks. A good cause, indeed, and we donate every year. . . . . . . . p.s. I just checked; he said that he ran across the doc on Fox (which I don't have available to me).

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

It seems like everybody is doing this.

The high school principal did it today after school. She was hilarious. Someone's dad has a construction company and they used one of his big front loaders filled with ice and dumped it right on her.
