Re: Ice Bucket Challenge Goes Terribly Wrong...

I'm so over all the Ice Bucket/Ice Water videos. It was an attention-getter at first, but it's really over the top now. I'd much rather see videos of people writing their checks / making their donations than seeing ice water poured over someone's head. The actual funding is what is most important!!

It seems that unless a poster's view agrees with that of the majority, they are ridiculed accused of being mean, jealous of others having fun, heartless, insensitive and the list goes on. Why even have a discussion if all that's wanted is a series of isn't that wonderful type posts?

Well, I don't think this bucket challenge is wonderful for at least two reasons.

One being that of pressuring another into donating and or dumping ice water on their head. Nothing about that is wonderful, to me, it's disgraceful.

The second is that much of the money donated to this charity, no matter how worthwhile, takes money from other equally or more deserving charities.

Of course those who want the world to know about any and all things they do, especially if they are going to get recognition for being a generous "fun" person like this sort of public exhibition.

Personally, I admire people who do good things, donate, privately without wanting something back.

I disagree with this statement as well. If it weren't for the "gimmick" that drew the attention to this cause, this money for the most part probably would not have been donated at all--therefore, other charities still would not have received any benefit.

That's your guess not based in any facts. Maybe some wouldn't donate to anything but many do budget charitable donations and what they donate to one charity has to come from donations to others.

And I'm sorry, but you have no facts to back up your statement either. You have no idea what anyone would have donated to what charity, with or without this challenge. It is "possible" that "all" the donations came from people who didn't have it budgeted for any other charity. The whole assumption is guess work, only I'm admitting it...we don't know now and never will know if any other worthy charities were shortchanged because of this. I just happen to think that a lot of people who would otherwise never have thought of donating to anything, donated to this because of the "gimmick".

Since when is it a bad thing to donate to a charity? I must be missing something because I don't understand the logic. If a charity is in need of funds because donations are down, isn't that what they do, try to get publicity to increase donations?

Scottie, I hadn't seen it, LOL!

I'm trying to imagine a peanut butter challenge and I'm getting some wild ideas {#emotions_dlg.laugh}

Lupus has been an Orphan Disease for years and years, but things are getting better. Two foundations have knocked themselves out getting it in the news and fundraising.

You know what helped? "House." So often, Dr. House told his residents, "It's never lupus."

Quote from a FB friend. I thought it was cute....and real.

""Well I did the ice bucket challenge, but when I previewed the video I changed my mind about posting it on facebook, put it this way some old people have no business doing Ice bucket challenges! keepin it real!""

Everyone is entitled to have their opinion about whether or not this was a good idea. But I beg to differ with some posters on a couple of points. If this "gimmick" has raised $41 Million, compared to $2 Million last year -- at that rate of donations it would have taken 20 YEARS to raise the amount of money that has been raised so far from this challenge.

Maybe it is winding down, and maybe there are still a lot of people who don't have any idea of the real reason they allowed someone to dump ice water on their heads. But just think what researchers can do with that $41 Million in the next 20 years ...finding new treatments, possibly a cure, and yes, educating the public about this horrible disease. That's 20 years of research and education that would not have been possible without this "gimmick"... it's up to the people who participate to have the good sense to do it safely.

I just saw a clip of ex-Presidential candidate Mitt Romney with Paul Ryan pouring the water on his head ---now THAT was priceless! Hope Mitt and Paul donated a LOT of money!

Just an update -- change that $41 Million to $53 MILLION - that's the total now that has been raised from this "gimmick". Well worth it, I would think. At an average prior donation level of $2 Million, that makes it over 25 years it would have taken to raise that amount of money. I hate that anyone has gotten hurt doing this, but there are times when the end does justify the means!

I agree. People can have a good time AND raise money!

I feel that some are just a bit grumpy or something. I am not sure why - this seems to span across generations, income, races, gender, and even political lines - and everyone is having a great time!

but there will always be a few party poopers.
