I grew up in Southern California without A/C also. I don't remember it being horribly hot. 25 years ago I moved to the Seattle area and still do not have A/C but it is getting hotter and hotter up here and people are starting to put it in.
The few really hot days in So Cal my Dad would drive us to Balboa Island and we would get a frozen banana and walk along the ocean. Sometimes my sister and I would sleep in the backyard.

What a nice memory to have!
I grew up in Southern Illinois, right across the river from St. Louis, MO, so it was always hot and steamy. Maybe kids just don't notice the heat --- we were ALWAYS outside in the summer. No one had AC.
Living in Maryland, I find the weather is about the same as where I grew up, and, lately, it seems there are more extremes.
On the whole, temps are very moderate, but we have many more days over 95. It's brutal!
