I don't like vagueness. I need clear cut and black and white. Otherwise things can be taken wrongly or applied to a myriad of situations or events. Who has the time to analyze that??

It's pretty easy to interpret this. We all wish these problems weren't happening right now during our lifetimes, but that's how everyone in the past felt too when they had to deal with equally weighty problems. Now, just like then, we rise to the occasion with the time we have left in our lives.

If Frodo and Gandalf hadn't given their all in the fight against evil, darkness would have won. So it also highlights the importance of the individual in contributing to a positive outcome. And it all worked out in the story because that story was written with a happy ending.
