I can't wait to see how pretty he looks all brushed out and really cleaned up. He is still doing great, fits right in. Of course he rescued me too in some way I have not figured out yet except he makes me smile.
That's PLENTY.

Yea - love happy endings! I think Chance won the lottery when he ended up with you. Does the young lady who initially adopted him out of the shelter know how well he is doing? If it makes sense (I don't know all the details so hard to say), you could send her a note with a picture of him with his sisters and thank her for being unselfish enough to realize she was not the right home for him. (You don't need to reply to this, it is just a thought)
Congrats and thanks for updating us.

He has manners and he gets along great with my 2 girls. I took him to the groomer where she was able to get a lot of his matted coat out and she cleaned his ears, which she said were hot and a lot of gunk came out of them. She also did his glans. As a precaution I took him back to the Vet and he has lost 1 pound since he has been with me which is a good thing because he is a little over weight. I feed 1/3 cup of dog food and 1/3 cup of Pumpkin twice a day. They get Carrots, Celery, Green Beans and Cucumbers for snacks. The Vet put him on antibiotics for his skin and a new med Apoquel for itching. We think his flaky skin is due to the fact that he was not groomed in so long and the vet said he could have had fleas before too. I also got him all up-to-date on his vaccinations. So he is all set. They asked me if I have found any difficult behaviors now that I have had him for almost a month and I honestly said "no". This dog is great. I am still stunned that he somehow ended up in a Shelter.
This made my day! So happy for your family and Chance! Enjoy your baby boy!

Wow conlt what a story with a very happy ending I am so very happy for you and the new addition to your little sheltie family, it was meant to be. I was looking to find another sheltie a couple of months ago but it did not work out, maybe next time, stories like yours give me hope that it will happen!

My neighbor who is close to 90 now adopted a Sheltie and a cat when her husband passed away about 7 years ago. Actually her kids got her the pets, I wouldn't have at that age but she is happy. I feel like the dog needs to be walked but she can barely walk herself and she can't control him.
Her sheltie is super hyper, super loud and barks all the time. Every time we walk by it is crazy. Her dog bit me once when I stuck my hand over to pet another dog her son had living there. Needless to say I don't stick my hand out anymore. The sheltie liked other dogs but was jealous when you showed attention to the other ones. Inside the house he was an angel.
She has tried obedience training many times and has given up.
I think you have some good ones, I don't know what their nature normally is. Are Sheltie's usually mild tempered?

What a nice outcome this story has had. I'm so glad Chance ended up with you and he's even bonded to your pack already. That's fantastic.
Unfortunately many people, and not just young people, buy pets as an impulse buy, or for gifts, which is not appropriate. Shelters bulge with animals in the months following Christmas.
I'm sure Chance was immediately happy with you b/c he could immediately sense an atmosphere of balance, safety and happiness in your home among all who lived there. I'm sure your two girls filled him in immediately about how lucky he was! So very glad you could keep him.

I would not think a Sheltie is for a 90 year old lady, who can barely walk and never had one. They are very sweet dogs that form close bonds with their families. It is normal for them to be a little standoffish with strangers but as a rule do not bite. Some are born with fears and they have to be well socialized when young or they can become scared and nippy. They are extremely active dogs, need a purpose and exercise everyday. I have a fenced yard and that gives them plenty of room to run off energy. They keep me on my toes, that is for sure. Some people get a Sheltie because they are cute and pretty and don't end up socializing them and training them so sometimes the dog ends up timid and nippy. Many don't understand that Shelties are quite vocal. They bark and herd anything and everything. Again, it takes a special person to understand and own a Sheltie. Those of us that do Love them intensely. They make the greatest dogs but the work has to be put into them when they are babies. They almost come Pre-trained because they are so smart and easily understand training commands in very few repetitions. My youngest was the easiest one I every trained. She earned her AKC Good Citizen Certificate at only 9 months. It seems I only needed to show her once what to do and she got it. A bright dog like that is a challenge though because they are head strong. The owner has to be the Alpha when it comes to Shelties. My neighbor who is close to 90 now adopted a Sheltie and a cat when her husband passed away about 7 years ago.
