I went to see a new doctor I was assigned to with a hypenated name and I asked him why he hypenated his name and he told me it was his wife's name. Now I can't figure out what he meant by that. My son's wife hypenated her name but my son is still using his own given name. Have you ever heard of the man taking the woman's name?

I know a couple who decided to use both last names in a unique (to me, anyway) manner. I won’t use their real name (it's an unusual one), but as an example: Jane Smith married John Wilson. After the marriage, she changed her name to Jane Wilson Smith and he changed his to John Smith Wilson. They wanted to honor both families’ history and ancestry in that way.😊

Becoming very common, mutual respect.

John Smith married Mary Ward
If he takes her name he is John Smith-Ward or John Ward-Smith
Not all the difficult to understand

I know a couple who also did this Mary Smith married John Doe - they both changed their names to Smith - Doe so when they have children everyone's name will be the same.
To be perfectly honest I don't understand why the OP thinks that personal information about her doctor is really any of her business.

@newname0 Now I'm confused. Are you confused about how to address the doctor or about why he chose to use both names?

I was wondering the same thing. I used to work with a gentleman who married a female Methodist pastor and took her last name hypenated with his last name (Mr. Her last name - His last name). She used the same combination of hyphenated last names also.
