Re: I'm calling the State Health Dept. on our local Pizza Hut tomorrow!

I worked in canneries in Oregon, everyone had very clean standards,I never witnessed anythung gross. Now restaurants are another story,I saw some aweful things in a few,one of the problems is Health Departments are not staffed enough for surprise inspections.

My dd and sil bought a bar & restaurant 2 years ago.The only place in our little town and had been run by the same family for many years.OMG we were shocked at how filthy it actually was, especially the kitchen, it took us almost 2 months to get it cleaned, new flooring, toilets, kitchen appliances. They turned the place into non-smoking and have a whole new clientele.

Anyway,we saw the Health Dept. Inspection sheets and they passed them every time.Shocking what they do not look at.

That wasn't nice. Please read this post through.

She's only 18 and starting her 2nd year in school (1 year Jr. college and now beauty school). She doesn't live with her parents, so she doesn't have a free ride.

You learn to stand up when you are older, but I think when you are young you are afraid to say something. That's why she told me. She knows I'll do something.

Even though her dad is paying for her school, she has to pay her own gas, insurance, etc. She is saving up for gas to go back and forth the 70 mile round trip 5 days a week.

I'd call that responsible. She isn't wanting the money for fun stuff!

One more thing: What good would her quitting do anyway? They will still be running without her. They will just hire more people since jobs aren't real plentiful in the summer with all the kids wanting jobs.

She also works 8 1/2 hours a day with no break of any kind including a meal break. I thought it was against the law, but in Kansas it is NOT. Unbelievable!!!

My apologies, mima.....I guess I spoke without considering her age.....I am glad she spoke to you about it and your able to speak for her and the others working there....I hope something is done to clean up the place......once again...I am sorry for being so mean spirited...you and she didn't deserve that from me....

Two co-workers have already quit in the last few days and one of the girls had been there for 2 years.

They don't fix anything either. Their ventilation system in the kitchen quit and she said you about choke in there. The freezer quit yesterday so they can only fix thin crust pizza, not pan. I don't know the connection there. It was through text.

Sorry mima,

I gotta do as I always do and tell it like I see it. Never been one to tip-toe through the tulips, so to speak, and it doesn't depend on how well I know someone or if I do not know them at all. Think what you will be what I am saying below I would say the same to anyone that told me what you have said in this post and the one with which you opened this thread.

Why would she, or anyone care if they know the source of the report? Here again one is shown that "gotta cover my butt" you never know. I grew up talking right with the ones about which I was complaining. I am talking at my earliest teen age. My mother didn't teach me to avoid letting someone know when I disagreed or had a complaint about something.

What? Does she plan on being a Pizza Hut Exec in her future? Why would she or you care that they know the source of the complaint. Maybe the internet has taught the younger generations about anonymity, but people older than the "highway in the sky world" should not have come from that same world. Unfortunately even some of us older folks like to hide in the world of the unknowns, for all different types of reasons.

Unless Pizza Hut is paying much more than what I last read, I can't imagine a couple weeks pay making the difference between any issues that would come up before mid June that are so dire that those weeks of pay are more important than possibly letting customers get sick from these things you mention, or possibly even die. But I guess being anonymous is more important to some than to others like myself.

Re: I'm calling the State Health Dept. on our local Pizza Hut tomorrow!

I hear these same types of complaints about local establishments. The Pizza Hut in this area is now strictly a take out business; they moved out of their restaurant chain building, (rumor was because of the roach infestation) and into a storefront building in a strip mall. There are 4 Chinese restaurants within a two mile radius in town, and it is rare to find all 4 open at the same time. Two of them seem to have compliance issues with health department standards, and it is not uncommon to see the CLOSED sign on the door, along with a handwritten sign that says "Closed for Remodeling". This is a big joke in this little blip of a town, as there has never been any visible evidence of "remodeling" in those 2 Chinese restaurants, so everyone suspects it was closed due to the roach infestation and possible other health department violations.

You know, John, filters aren't always a bad thing. What you obviously consider some sort of virtue in that you blurt out whatever you're thinking, isn't always. This is a young girl who wants to do the right thing but has little of life's experiences to guide her and help her. She has turned to her grandmother, which I find to be a perfectly fine way to handle this, she hasn't turned a blind eye to what's going on.

In the end, it's being handled, right? It really doesn't matter if she stays there and finishes out her two weeks or not. The call has been made.

She gets around $15-$20 an hour when you count tips. That's quite a bit when she works 5 days a week. Like I said, she is saving her money for gas so she can get to and from school.

Our town is very small. Everybody knows everybody. It's not like the city where when you are gone that's it. You would be known as a trouble maker. I know you wouldn't care, but her being so young just doesn't want that I guess. Like I said before, people don't learn to stand up for themselves until you get some age on you.

If she quit, she would not be keeping people from getting sick. They aren't going to close the doors because one waitress quit. They would just hire the next one that came in the door. Quitting would not help at all.

Thanks for your input though.

John, I enjoy your posts very much but in this case I think you are off the mark. We who have the money we need to get by on often can't appreciate what a couple weeks wages mean to others.

It matters not who reports it as long as someone does and Mima is going to.

Hi scotttie,

Nothing wrong with a differing of thoughts that's for sure. What I said has nothing to do with money and everything to do with character for me. I got fired from several restaurants from age 12-17 because of things I said to managers. They didn't like what I had to say and I didn't like whatever it was to which I objected. Could have 1 of many different things.

I was young then and was working to help my mother support our family so money was important. My mother however taught me to do what I thought was the right this regardless of any circumstances, and I followed and still follow what she taught me. Then, as in now, a person can almost always find a job at a restaurant regardless of how many others have fired them. This of course depends on the reason of the firing. I mean things like theft and/or drug use? Who different thing that a disagreement with a manager.

And as things would have it? I disagree with your last sentence. My life's experiences with the many people I have met tell me differently. For some reason I at times felt like a had a sign on my forehead or back that said: "Complain here", or something similar.

More people including co-workers would come to me and complain about this complain about that. My response was almost always the same, and one which I practice what I preach. If you have a complaint tell it to someone that is in a position to do something about the issue, and that is not me.

Many of these same people would come back later, maybe days or weeks later with the same complaint. I would ask them who they spoke with about this problem that was in a position to do something about it. Most of the time it was either silence or nobody, yet. And that was/is my life's experience with many, no I will say most, that complain about something.

Nothing wrong with me agreeing to disagree with you is there? =^..^= =^..^=
