At my ripe old age....early 60's...I'm thinking about joining Facebook. And no, not to check on LR, but to look up some old friends. I've been retired for 8 years and it seems nobody has land lines anymore. How do I start? How much personal info do you have to put out? Do you have to put your picture on your page? I have an iphone 6+ that is basically used to take pictures of my cats. I am not a technology wiz. What's the first thing I do and is there a charge?

No charge.
You don't have to post your photo or personal information like where you live, ehere you work or went to school.
Type in facebook.com and go from there.

I am not Tech Savy either, but managed to get on Facebook Years ago (with a little help) My picture is of my Dogs, Never put personel info on Facebook, do not say when you are going to be away. Show the vacation pictures when you get back. Once you are on and Friend people just remember they have friends who can see your info. There is a way to ONLY let "Your" Friends see your info. I am Still learning. Just yesterday someone said they accepted my Friend Request!! BUT I Did NOT Friend him have no idea who he is SO I BLOCKED him.

While I don't FB, I've given up the idea of locating former friends based on the paranoid comments posted here.
OMG! THEY WANT SOMETHING! YOUR DIAMONIQUE! THEY'RE A STALKER! I WATCH ID TV, JUST DON'T!!!!
I never knew people were so paranoid about someone they once knew so very well. I certainly don't want to cause someone so much anxiety.
I wanted nor needed a thing other than to say hello.

Just be very careful of who you "friend". Some people are not who they seem to be.

Just be extremely careful with what information you post.
There's no charge ..... but it's really surprising that so many people still haven't figured out how they can have such a big, profitable business and not charge the customers. Duh.
Print out their Terms of Use .... and read the whole thing very carefully. Enough said.

It doesn't cost anything.....You don't have to put a profile photo of yourself, if you want you can use a photo of your cat, flowers, a sunset etc...... you don't even have to fill out personal info in your profile and leave that blank, there is certain mandatory info, to create account, name and email, and phone, you'll get reminders to ask if you want to add to your profile I just ignore those. You don't have to post pictures if you don't want to on your page. . some have said not to put your real birthdate (security/privacy issue)...that's up to you....the most critical is the privacy/securtiy settings....read these sections...you can have it set so that just your friends can see info...There's no charge......there might be ads but if it gives yu the option click the down arrow and block it.......you can also use the down arrow to hide posts that asks if you know people and want to ask to be their friend.....or if it's an ad you can't block, just hit the "x" in the upper right hand corner to remove them.....
Any questions, post here on the Q forum and people will try to help you.
I don't use Facebook that often, I only have 7 friends which consists of out of town relatives (friends have to ask your permission to join your page---you can accept or block them).....
If you want to posts photos from your iphone, add the Facebook app to your phone and then if you want to post a photo of your cats on your Facebook Page just hit the photo icon on Facebook, and then click the photo from your photo gallery on your phone it will show on Facebook and hit post.
Don't hit the news stories on the left---sometimes it leads to spam so I was told...and Facebook got in trouble for fake news anyway.....
Good Luck! Have fun! Discuss fun topics that you and your friends enjoy.....I'd stay away from policitics or controversal topics....you can post news links (copy and paste) Some people post way too much info it drives you crazy, I dont care what they had for breakfast/lunch/dinner......and there every move throughout the day or night....if this drives you crazy click the arrow and select "see fewer posts like this"........

I just know it isn't for me. Friends are on and want me to join. They like it. For me it is TMI.

After you go to Facebook.com, you will have to give them a name, password, and email or phone number. Most people use their real name so that they can be 'found,' but some use a first and middle name; it's totally up to you. It's been a long time since I joined, but I think FB will ask you for certain information after that, but none of it is mandatory. Just enter as much as you feel comfortable with. You don't even need a personal picture, you can pick animals or scenery, or just leave it blank.
Before you go too far, be sure to look over the Privacy section. Again, most people limit their posts to only their "Friends," at least to start. Once you're in, I'm sure there are a lot of people you know who are already on and can help you get around. Have fun!

I use my first name, maiden name and married name so old friends will be able to find me.
