I like this quote too, and in my view it has a wider scope that one might realize.

We should never alter our behavior or measure our behavior by what others do.

We should always take the high road.  It reflects on who we are.

I heard this one today, and like it quite a lot:

"'An eye for an eye' means everyone goes blind."

Strive for respect instead of attention. It lasts longer.

That reminds of a shorter phrase "Don't lower yourself to their level."

I'll need to remember this here on the boards , often.

Thanks for sharing additional quotes, everyone!  Last year, I had a calendar with thought provoking, daily quotes.  I wish I had kept it, since I've now forgotten so many of them.

I agree that "take the high road" and "don't lower yourself to their level" are different interpretations of my original quote.  Haven't we all heard these words before?

My mom has never been rude to another person, just because that person was rude to her.  I used to think she was kind of weak at times...now I see it as a sign of strength to be able to just walk away.

Another very simple one and one that my mother always said ---

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything.

I try to do this.  At times it is hard, but I find when I can adhere to this, I am much happier.

Maybe this is why some people are so quiet!

This may not be a quote, but it is a saying that I once read, and I try to live by it.

"Your day is a success if you've made one person feel better about themselves".

I know at times I've been down and a simple compliment from someone will boost my spirits.

I was at Walmart a few weeks ago and the young man working in the Deli said to me... thank you for being kind and having such a good attitude.  It's so nice to see a friendly smile.    He said we don't always see a lot of that around here.

I hope that somehow I made that young man feel that I appreciated his assistance.
