Re: I know I will be happy when it's

I'm not a football fan and couldn't care less about the Stupor Bowl, but I do have to say I like Peyton Manning and am happy to hear he's playing. He's very handsome!

I only like the commercials during the Super Bowl! I think they have ""leaked"" almost all of them already so I don't think I need to watch the game to see them this year.

Love baseball and am so not interested in this Super Bowl....I love Manning but want Seattle to win since they never have....I tend to root for the underdog...

Know I won't be watching......I just cringe every time I see one of them get hit in the head. I saw a very interesting show on PBS very late last night. It's a hard cruel sport.......

I've heard it suggested that they go back to playing with leather helmets, no pads...not all of the protection they have now. It might be a good idea. Maybe they'd stop using their bodies as weapons.

No, that's not a good idea.....their heads need all the protection they can get...... I believe they use their heads as weapons too.

That's what I'm saying...if they would FEEL the hit on the outside of the head and not just the reverberation inside, they might stop using their heads as weapons.

I know that the brain is involved in babies when they are shaken and that is why it is not a good idea to toss them up and down while being held. Our brains are not to be rattled around. Doctors have been telling folks not to do this for years. Yes, the babies like to have that done to them, and they do seem to laugh a lot when it is being done, but not a good idea.

When I saw some of the players that have had brain damage on that show last night, I said to my self....."that's it, I know I definitely will not watch the Super Bowl"......for that reason.

And I definitely know that if I had a teenage some and he wanted to play high school football, I would never give him permission.

I believe Shaken Baby Syndrome occurs when a baby is shaken violently back and forth. I don't think tossing a baby up and down a few times does any harm. Of course, a baby has to be old enough to support his own head.

I'm very grateful neither one of my sons wanted to play football. It's such a dangerous sport. My younger son played baseball for quite a while and I remember one time when he got hit by a pitch (on his arm, not even his head). My eyes welled up with tears! What would I have done if he got tackled or knocked down by a bunch of other boys? Thank goodness I never had to worry about that.

Thanks to Mollies Twin for pointing out the very good reason why the game can't be planned for the city of either of the participants.

IMHO New Jersey made the list because they probably wanted to put the game in or very near a major urban center. Kind of glad to hear that Arizona is on the list also. They have been trying to host the game for a long time, but the league resisted putting the SB in a state that delayed recognizing MLK Day as a holiday.

PS Very honestly, venue couldn't matter a bit to me, even if my home team made the game. At $1,000 to park and $3,000 or $4,000 for the cheapest seat in the house, I'll have the best seat available - right in front of my giant screen TV, with a rest room and a snack bar only about ten feet away, and no wait for either. As of yesterday they had about 18,000 unsold seats. Can you imagine the league "reverse scalping" all those seats?

Follow-up: To answer my own question about "reverse scalping" the cheap seats are now going for $1,500, and should be lower by game time. Hey, that's only $1 a day for 4-1/4 years.

2015 will be the second Super Bowl hosted in AZ. The last one was in 2008, I believe.

MLK day became a holiday here in 1992. It was brought to a vote in 1990 and defeated. The Super Bowl was set to be played here in 1993. The NFL moved it to SoCal as a result of that vote in 1990.

New Hampshire was the last state to approve an MLK holiday in 1993

Source, as to reason for the move, please.

Pretty well known info, but here you go:

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

It was a different time in Arizona. During the late 60s and early 70s people packed up and moved west during a period known as "White Flight."

Bruce Merrill spent 40 years teaching social psychology at Arizona State University.

"Many older very conservative people that had money left cities like Detroit, Cleveland and Chicago to get away from African Americans frankly," said Merrill.

Merrill said it's not surprising Arizona was the second to last state to adopt Martin Luther King Day. For years state lawmakers like Gov. Evan Mecham didn't support the holiday. When it was up to voters in 1990 they agreed.

"That's one reason that the first Martin Luther King holiday vote failed. Because it's the older more conservative people who go to the polls particularly on elections that deal with special events like that," said Merrill.

But that way of thinking didn't sit well with local businesses. It is estimated MLK boycotts cost the state more than $200 million.

In 1991 the state was thrust into the national spotlight when the National Football League pulled the Super Bowl out of Tempe.

"It became a very controversial issue and solidified some of the people who opposed the holiday. But on the other hand I think the media attention also highlighted the MLK holiday and it became an opportunity to tell the people of Arizona through the media how important this was for the state and our future," said Merrill.

The issue came up for another vote in 1992. That time it passed. Phoenix hosted the Super Bowl in 1996.
