When the cashier at my grocery store asked "you mean there was a time you could dial a telephone number and not have to use the area code?"  I told her to shut up!!  She laughed but she did look at me funny when I remember as a young girl not even having a 7 digit phone number but a five digit number.  Then our town got so big we had to have the prefix to our phone numbers.  That shocked her.  I left thinking I should have asked her if she had every seen a rotary phone?

@beckyb1012...I remember having a rotary phone and there were no area codes yet. I think to call long distance, you dialed zero to get an operator. Cat LOL

Do you remember having party lines or is that before your time?  We would go to make a call and the other party was on it.  You had to keep checking to see when they were done.

@Winkk...yes, we had party lines. It was mostly two women who would gab for hours. If my mother wanted to use the phone, she would say "Get off the phone", and they would hang up. Cat LOL

Mine from AARP stopped when I wrote a note telling them to not send me anything ever again. I put it in their own postage paid envelope they provided for you to sign up.

I knew I was old when I'd tell people I was retired and they believed me, I always looked younger than my real age.

Re: I knew I was old when...

The other day I was telling a story that required me to tell about my dad always giving me a dime and saying, "wherever you are, for whatever reason, if you need a ride, call me."  My young friend had no clue about pay telephones.  Boy did I feel old!
