@KYToby wrote:The OP overreacted. Most people look at Caller ID and ignore such calls, but if one does not do this, all that is necessary is to state that you are not interested (or in the OP's case that the MIL is not able to come to the phone) and simply hang up.
Being mean and nasty to someone on the phone who is simply doing their job (or in this case, likely volunteering because of concern for the upcoming election) is simply uncalled for.
I live in a tri level my caller ID is upstairs. I'm not about to trot upstairs every time the phone rings to see who is calling. WE use caller ID to let us know who called while we are away

share and we have gotten about 7 phone calls in the last couple of weeks.... never owned a time share in our lives.... since it is a robo-call i dont think we can do anything about this.... and if i reject the call they leave a voice mail.... i feel frustrated!!
Pick up the phone for a second, then hang up immediately. That stops the VM.

I said a few choice words also as you can imagine. These calls are driving me crazy!! I am on the DNC list but they continue. This is not a political thread, but about telemarketers in general. Maybe I shouldn't have been so nasty, but it hit me the wrong way. I'm just venting.
Wow !!! Why the hostility? If your son or daughter had this job, would you still be so nasty to callers?
I've only read the first page of comments, so perhaps this was covered, but no need to be so darn rude. Just say "Sorry, not interested" and hang up .... or get Caller ID .... or just don't answer the phone and let them leave a message. It's your choice to answer the phone ... or not.
Telemarketing is a JOB .... and a very difficult one, at that. Call center work is very stressful, and these people aren't the ones compiling lists of people to be called. Can you imagine the number of rude jackazzes they have to deal with on any given day? Yikes!
Since we all know that telemarketers exist, and everyone gets called sooner or later. I say decide how you want to handle them and then go about your day. Personally, I just let calls I don't recognize go to voicemail, and they rarely leave a message. No need to be so nasty about it.

Answering machines, screens those calls for you, to save you those headaches. Those people know nothing about who is on the other end of who they're calling. Yes, it's a pain, but save yourself the agony.

You didn't say if you answered from a landline phone. I'm supposing you did. I dumped my landline years ago and just use my cell phone. I can honestly say I haven't received not one unwanted call ever! EVER! I really don't understand why one puts themselves through all the spam phone calls when they don't have to!

The Do Not Call Registry does not affect Political polls, charitable donations (calls) and some others. Go check the FTC for further information. You will always get these calls despite being on the DNC Registry.

You're lucky if you're not getting them also on your cell phone. I have been, but this was the first year of it after having a cell phone (with the same number) for over 22 years.
Fortunately, even on my dumb phone, I can push a button that cuts the call. I would never answer them, of course.
But it's a drag that that started. It's still mostly on the landline, but some days I'll get 2 or 3 on my cell phone and that's a number that I've not give to more than 4 people over the last 15 years. None of those are companies or people not very close to me, BTW. I just basically don't give it out.

@cherry Hi. I wouldn't walk up the stairs either! We have a phone that has the caller ID on the phone itself, not the base, which makes it easier. I usually keep the phone with me or at least in the room I am in. The caller ID also appears on the tv screen if the tv is on.

I look for that the next time we get a phone
