*One of my favorite cartoons was two deer talking about humans.  One said: "Why don't they thin their own d*mn herd?"

There are two sides to every story.

Re: I hate this time of year

I live in southern WV, and this county is totally overrun with deer.  For the last 2 months, every single night, a small herd of about 15 deer, mainly doe and fawns pass thru our property.  After enjoying many of the apples, they have stripped leaves and bark from the young trees in my brothers yard, standing on their hind legs to reach as far up in the tree as they possibly can.  Deer are voracious eating machines, and once they find a food source, they keep coming back until they eat everything in sight.  Any WV property owner who has to go to extreme measures to grow a simple garden, build an orchard from new trees, and even landscape their yard, do not ever think deer are cute.  We do think deer are one of the most annoying creatures to have on your property, and we want to see as many taken out as possible during hunting season.   Anyone who has driven thru WV on interstates 64 or 77, has likely had a deer jump out in front of them, seen a dead deer on the side of the highway, or seen the telltale mess left behind when these animals are hit by a vehicle doing 70 mph.   I would much rather have known that deer was killed and eaten, than to know anyone was injured or killed, or has the hassle of getting their vehicle repaired or replaced after that accident.

Between bow and gun season, more than 55,000 deer are usually killed here statewide.  This small state has 55 counties, and even if 1,000 deer are killed in this county alone, during our brief hunting season, it won't make a visible dent in the deer roaming our property.  My family has 4 hunters who will be in the woods at daylight on opening day armed, ready, and hoping for a trophy buck, but oh so ready to take out whatever passes thru that is legal kill.   If either of my daughters are lucky enough to take one down this year, we will hang it proudly in our garage for several days, cut it up, package it and fill the freezer designated just for deer meat.   My family has hunted the woods in this area since before WV became a state.  Hunting to us is a win-win situation.  For the price of a license and appropriate stamps, the state profits financially, we get to legally take out one or more of these nuisance animals, and fill our freezer with the venison we enjoy.   This is just what my family does, and we do it legally, and proudly.

Yes, kill the animals because they've become a nuisance to us even though we have moved into their territory and pushed them further and further into smaller and smaller spaces and how dare them not stay in those tiny spaces we've allotted for them! Who do they think they are?? Kill them all!

SMH at people who think that we need to kill animals that are just trying to live in this messed up world we've created for them with loss of habitat, etc because we are so greedy and think it is all about US (humans). Animals have been able to mange their own balance long before we got here and mucked it all up.  Makes me sad.

Re: I hate this time of year

What about rats and mice, moles, etc., animals that spread diseases, cause fires, ruin food gardens, etc., they were here before us, are they fair game? Deer are cute and cudly until they aren't, which animals trying to live their lives are okay to kill?

Everyone who lives in a building lives on land that was changed to the detriment of animals, and I'm willing to bet they also keep animals out of their homes and kill the ones that manage to get in. Same with the roads we all drive on and the fields that grow the plants and animals most of us eat.

I just want the animals that have to be killed to be killed humanely.

Re: I hate this time of year

I grew up with relatives that hunted. Some still do. You're either in one camp or the other. It's weird to see the pictures but people that hunt and eat the meat, I have no problem with. But then again I don't have friends posting those kinds of pictures

I wouldn't get my feathers ruffled. Just scroll past or if it bothers you that much, unfriend them. If I were that disgusted with their behavior I wouldn't be friends with them to start with.

Re: I hate this time of year

RedTop, I am here in Pa. have the same problem with those darn deer. Can't plant a garden they trash it all up and destroy all the plants and the veggies. can't even put a fence up some way they get over it. Friends have put Christmas tree's in their gardens with lights on them the deer still come. Put radio's with music playing deer still destroy the plants, wind chimes, pie pans, lights that will flash when they approach nothing works. Expensive lawn shrubs are all stripped. The worst part of this is the fact we have homes around here and you aren't allowed to hunt them so we have to put up with the problems they cause. this whole area would rejoice if we could get animals out of all our yards and  off our property. To some people they are beautiful for the ones of us who have to live with their destruction they are a absolute nuisance.

The problem with discussions like this is that they tend to be totally oblivious to the natural food chain on earth. which has evolved over many centuries.  Disrupt that food chain by preventing humans at the top of the chain from harvesting food from species lower on the food chain, and we  might find some consequences to our ecosystem  that are hard to survive with.  Every level of the chain hunts or cultivates and  harvests something below it to keep the cycle of life going.

Nothing good happens when a link in a chain is yanked and broken.  Maybe we should be careful about crafting our wishes, because they might come true and bite future generations of both humans and animal/plant life in the rear end.
