Re: I had dinner with a complete stranger🙂

There is a huge group of older vulnerable, isolated folks living in the shadows, and characterized as “Elder Orphans”.  They have no social or physical care support system, primarily as a result of deaths, divorces, estrangements, and no children or family.

Very uncomfortable to acknowledge and talk about.

What a warm story, how kind of you to share it w/ us. It brought tears to my eyes, b/c some elder folks really don't have anyone to ever talk to & that's so sad, they are so lonely. I find elder folks very interesting, all they've gone through, etc..What you did was give a wonderful gift of time, no amount of money can buy that. Even though I don't know the elder gent I thank you & your hubby on his behalf, you are very, very kind folks, THANK YOU!!!  L

In my case it’s not the younger generation. It’s the older generation that has done the ignoring. You sound like super grandparents- exactly what my DH and I want to be someday (my kids are still school age)

That is so very, very sad & it just should not be. I have a huge soft spot in my heart for elder people, they have paid their dues over & over again & should never have to live so all alone.

I love when we go out for the day, to interact with complete strangers in this manner.

We too have shared a table, especially is very crowded situations, and have always enjoyed the people we meet.

With the news of the day, it can seem the world is a bleak and sinister place (and in reality, much of it is) but there are so many great people, great places and great experiences out there.

I honestly feel sorry for people that can't strike up a conversation in places like this, the grocery store line, or while waiting in the dr.'s office. It's amazing the people and their stories, and how wonderful you feel, when you come away from each experience.

I'm sure you did make his day. I think a lot of people who are alone go out to eat just to see other people, even though they often don't get to interact with them. That time spent, if you can imagine it, meant even more to him than it did to you.

Thanks for sharing, and reminding us all to reach out to others. The rewards are immense.
