Oh you are far from alone. I grew up in England where they eat, breathe and sleep soccer (football). One of my uncles in England played soccer when he was a young man, and his legs looked like whipping posts. All those years of being kicked and getting cleats in you takes a toll on the body. I like the World Cup just because it's only every 4 years and it's special, a tournament of all the world teams. I don't typically watch soccer on a regular basis, although I could have watched Beckham play all day.
I think soccer is pretty popular here, look at all the little leagues with kids playing on the weekends and the term "soccer mom". It seems to be a popular sport during school, even in high school, but it doesn't get much attention as a professional sport compared to football, baseball, hockey or basketball. Hopefully that will change with this coverage of the World Cup. I think sports unite people behind a team, even if they don't understand the sport. It encourages patriotism and gives people a reason to get together and drink and cheer!

Soccer bores me senseless. When our son (almost 45) first played in AYSO the parents had meeting to learn the basics. Husband did, I never did. So all I did was go to the games and cheer when everyone else did! The whole game just doesn't "compute" with me and I've never had any interest in watching any soccer at all, except the games my son played in for 2 seasons in AYSO.
You are NOT alone in the world!

I totally don't care about it. I do however, enjoy the pictures of the handsome soccer players in my morning newsfeed!

LOL You're a good mom, at least you tolerated it and supported your son in something he enjoyed doing, even if you didn't like it or understand it.

You and me hula. I think more kids and their folks are into this. I don't have any little little ones, so I may have napped too. LOL I still need to figure out tennis. (scoring). Makes no sense to me.

I'm a huge sports fan and I like soccer, I'm just not obsessed with it the way I am with American football. I used to watch soccer all the time years ago. I had a longtime SO who played in Spain. I kinda ditched the soccer when I ditched the SO.
I've always been partial to the Brazilians and the Dutch and Real Madrid (Spanish league).
