Words are used a lot of different ways. The dictionary may give a definition but that doesn't mean society uses it ONLY that way.

There are multiple dictionaries used in the U.S. Definitions vary to some degree in each of them. There are urban and slang dictionaries too.

We could all do well to stop nit-picking.

Ever try to understand the language the teens use? Computer terms? Set up an app or understand new gadgets on your car or TV settings?

The terminalogy is confusing and even a dictionary or Google is useless.

The Merriam Webster dictionary says:

The original meaning of iconic was essentially "resembling an icon," but today it often describes what is so admired that it could be the subject of an icon. And with that use, iconic has become part of the language of advertising and publicity: companies and magazines and TV hosts encourage us to think of some consumer item or pop star or show as first-rate or immortal or flawless—absolutely "iconic"—when that person or thing is actually simply widely known and—they assert—distinctively excellent.

In school we were taught never to use the term you're trying to find the definition for, in the definition.  Yet, in so many words I look up, there it is-how could I understand the meaning if you're telling me what it means with the same word I'm trying to find the meaning of! (Like the meaning above).

It's amusing to see language evolve, "Skibidi," anyone?

I'd consult one of the style guides before a dictionary to understand how language is used. Not every word/phrase is covered, but when it is, the "rules" are much more flexible.

They are sales people and they say whatever it takes to make sales.  I see nothing wrong wrong with that.
