I belong to many bird groups, and the only thing you can do is to stop feeding the birds for a bit so the rat moves on...

@goldensrbest  Stop using the boulder.

Are your feeders animal fool proof?

If you can get an extra feeder that deters animals such as squirrels.

The rat is hungry and found the boulder. He'll go away if there's no

more seed.

I wouldn't poison him at all. The death is slow and painful.

Call a pest control and they should come out and trap him humanely

I would not leave bird food out at night. Rats are nocturnal. Use a hanging type of feeder. Any food that falls from a hanging feeder needs to be picked up. Use a tray under the feeder to catch falling food.

@goldensrbest  Are you just placing seeds on the boulder with or without a feeder or dish?

Use hanging feeders and put them out in the morning.

I'm  tad confused what are doing with the boulder 🤔 so my previous post may not be addressing the issue.

@goldensrbest  Poison? Why, just because you don't like them? Agree or disagree, it is wrong. That creature has every right to be here just as the birds do.

@KittySoftPaws Plus it could be illegal and should be. The rat could die in her yard or somewhere else.

I wouldn't appreciate a dead animal someone else poisoned in my yard but especially knowing the animal suffered.

I hate to say it but I had this experience at my former home. I loved feeding the birds and small animals, but after time (and extensive construction in the area) rats moved in. Where's there's one, there will be more and no, they are not exclusively nocturnal. If food is there, they will come out and get it. It appears the only way to end the problem is to stop feeding altogether, for a time.

I stopped feeding the birds when it snowed and there were little mouse footprints all around the base of the feeder.

If you have Golden Retrievers @goldensrbest and you put poison out, not only will the mouse eat the poison so will your dog!! 😳

Or if the mouse eats it and dies in your yard. your dog will find the dead mouse!
