Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

I like the holiday but the fireworks are too much and the noise scares my dogs.

Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

Not a holiday I've ever found all that fascinating and particularly because it comes with the ilk who seem to get a big rush over seeing just how much noise they can make and how disruptive they can be... Besides, it's never limited to the 4th, but'll go on for at least a week after. I don't mind the fireworks displays put on by towns, cities, whatever, yet frankly, if you've seen one, you've seen them all; but the bottle rocket heads who seem to think it's either cute or some sort of testament to their manhood to set off the barrage of noise-makers add nothing to life on the planet...

Add me to the list of people who hate the firecrackers. I'm in Ohio and you can buy fireworks here, there's a couple of really big fireworks store very close to me, but you have to sign a paper declaring that you are taking them out of state. Crazy.

At least this year, it's not dry, so not as big a fear of fire. My jack russel mix is terrified of fireworks too.

Yep, crazy that you can BUY them here, but have to take them out of state. They have been going off here for the last two weeks. Found all sorts of fireworks in my backyard.

Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

I hate the idea of banning anything, but there is just no reason to set off fireworks in this area.

1. We're in a constant drought. Fireworks have been responsible for several fires -- even fires in the bosque (the heavily wooded area near the river where we in ABQ love to take our dogs). Every year they have to close the area, thinking that this will keep the idiots with fireworks out. This year looks promising: Someone realized that closing the bosque doesn't keep it safe. Keeping it open allows those who know it and use it to identify any illegal activity. (Finally.)

2. Our dog is absolutely terrified. I've never had a dog that is so terrified of fireworks.

3. I live at the top of a hill and we have a great view of the city and all its fireworks displays -- especially the big one at Balloon Fiesta Park. The families in the neighborhood can gather in my driveway and sit on chairs and they can watch and I don't mind. But they don't. Instead they set off illegal fireworks on the street and then never clean up the mess. I have to stand outside and watch both the professional fireworks displays and the amateur ones that could burn down my house.

We seem to have the same issue on New Year's. I just don't get it. Maybe it's just me. When I was a kid I was hit in the leg by a misfired Piccolo Pete. That made me lose all interest in playing with explosives.

Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

Here in South Carolina, you can literally buy fireworks on every street corner this week...I cannot stand it.

We used to have neighbors that lit every kind of firework known to man, even those GIGANTIC ones each 4th. It drove us insane to the point where my husband would sit out in the yard with a hose. Trust me we stopped a couple of small fires too.

I love the 4th, all the patriotic concerts and all, and I love fireworks. I just wish people would leave it to the professionals.

Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

I love watching the professional fireworks, though. Over a lake/lagoon/water is the best. Not much of a chance of fires, etc. But, as far as just anybody/lots of folks setting them off, I dislike the noise, chance of fire because of embers hitting roofs, and the strong risidual sulphur odor in the neighborhood(s).

Just a reminder to keep our pets indoors 'right about now'.

I don't mind fireworks, what I do mind is m-80's exploding in my neighborhood. When things are falling off the garage walls, that's a tad much. I live in Pa, they don't really care or do anything about it.

Re: I dread the 4TH of July anymore.

I hope to never loose the childlike enjoyment of holidays. For me, it's a time to gather with friends and celebrate with good food, good drinks and wonderful friendships.

That being said, I don't like amateur fireworks-particularly the ones that only boom. I had some in my old neighborhood. I doubt there will be any in my new neighborhood. The people who shoot guns on holidays are at the very bottom of the evolutionary chain. Ignorant fools not realizing stray bullets can and have killed people.

Don't think that the professional displays are any better in terms of noise. They're worse. I have a front row seat to the Macy's fireworks in NYC. It is one half hour of H3LL if you have pets because of the grand scale of it.
