My favorite cafeteria was Horn and Hardet (sp?) automat on Times Square. I wonder if that concept couldn't be tweaked and brought back?

Most of the buffets where I live are in casinos, and they are closed.

@RetRN : I understand how you missed the "buffet" issue; there is so much horrible news, so much confusion. I learned of this issue when reading about the reopening of LV. There are no current plans to reopen state shows or buffets.

Patbz,
I think the cafeteria was Horn & Hardart. I ate there when I was a little girl. My mother and I visited her aunt who lived in NYC, and all of ate there.
Very nice. As a young girl, I was bedazzled by the place.

Cruise ships are going to need to come up with a very different system to feed their guests. Dinner does have reserved seating that is booked in advance, but this will change breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Until the armed protesters gather to demand their right to buffets!!!!

I know the salad bar at market isn't opening anytime soon.
Pizza is still available and some packaged prepared foods.
We are not buffet people but once in a while we did like to get a quick salad if pressed for time.

I think there was a news report last night re: buffet style restaurants. Even w/ the sneeze guards and extra protection, they tested the shared utensils 10-12 minutes later and they still had bacteria on them.
Most restaurants will depend on plastic silverware, packets of condiments, disposable menus and gloved/masked waiters. That doesn't sound like a date night out to me. It sounds more like a Happy Meal. I'd rather eat home.

I haven't seen anything on t.v. about this but I probably missed it as I've not been watching as much virus news lately. DH and I were just discussing buffets yesteray and what they will do about this. He and I quit doing buffet ages ago as we noticed several unsavoury and unhygienic practices and saw people and their children at local places doing things which were quite unappetizing!!
We have a Chinese restaurant near us that I understand is totally serve yourself, eat as much as you want for one price, and it does a tremendous business. Wondering how they will handle this?
Also, another place, which is a chain restaurant, and they do a big business with their breakfast and salad bar.
I believe these places will either have to do away with these areas of their restaurants or totally revamp their businesses period.
In some ways, this may force many places to be a lot more proactive in their cleanliness!!!

@patbz DH grew up in NY and used to tell me about H & H. Never believed you put money in a window, took your food out and people replaced the item when door/window was closed. Sounded ridiculous to this Southern Girl.
Anyway, we did have cafeterias here before everything closed. They seem safer than buffets since servers are behind the food. Only one person at each station is handling your plate and the serving spoon...hopefully gloved and masked. I'd only be touching my tray and silverware (usually pre-wrapped in a napkin).
***IMHO, all eating places, stores, etc. when opened will be a cr-p shoot whether they're "safe", bacteria free, sanitized properly, following guidelines behind the scenes, etc. I've made it this long, it'll be awhile until I venture into these places. I have the outlook, "You Go First". When I see if the number of cases spike or not, I'll make my decision.
