I didn't click on the link but if it is about stopping animal abuse I'm all for it.

Circuses that use animals, rodeos, and animal racing should all be against the law. It's barbaric.

Ringling Bros. is going to stop using elephants for entertainment. They seem to be getting a lot of negative feedback for doing so.

The zoo here in Seattle is finally going to move their two surviving elephants to a facility in Oklahoma City where they'll have much more room to run around, plus water pools to play in--Asian elephants love water and they have barely a drop in the zoo here.

It's been quite a struggle for years with animal-rights people vs. the zoo folks and I'm glad to see that it's the elephants who are winning.

The last I heard about that is a lawsuit is being filed to stop it. Animal rights organizations do not want the elephants sent to another zoo, but to an animal sanctuary where they can live out their lives in a place where they are safe but as close to a natural environment as possible. I really have trouble with the whole concept of zoos and the imprisonment of animals.

Re: the last sentence I placed in bold letters, I agree completely.

Even as a child I hated zoos, they were always chained up. What a life! I visited the zoo in San Diego in the 70's and it was the first open zoo, with the animals free to move around. Reserves are the way to go..where they're in a protected enviornment.

Re: I am so thrilled about this

As for circuses - there are some stunningly brilliant circuses that don't use animals at all. They are all humans doing a variety of different feats. I saw one, many years ago, at a casino down in town and it was truly thrilling. Not one animal.

I forgot what that one was called but, as I recall, there are a few different ones - some US-based and some are Chinese.

I just wish some people didn't think it was ok to abuse animals. Additionally, I'm glad that more and more people are getting civilized about this cause.

My mother used to drag us to rodeos when I was growing up. I would just cry and cry. It was so horrific. I'll never forget the pain, heartbreak, and embarrassment I felt.

Anytime an animal is not in its natural environment is cruel. Sanctuaries for animals at risk of extinction are one thing but taking animals and putting them on display is wrong on so many levels.

Re: I am so thrilled about this

It seems that I've been signing a petition on this every other week. I just got two emails this morning from animal rights activists as regards this issue, and it made my day. It was just mentioned on CNN, and the newsman said he didn't understand why it would take 3 years. I don't understand it either but nevertheless, I'm thrilled with this news.

I don't know that Oklahoma City is the best choice for them though. Read here. Part of it:

In Defense of Animals (IDA) would consider it an inter-state and national travesty should the WPZ not be stopped by the city of Seattle, Washington from sending Bamboo and Chai to the Oklahoma City Zoo, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. This is why we, along with the group Friends of Woodland Park Zoo Elephants are encouraging all United States residents to write to Seattle city officials. What happens to Bamboo and Chai is now an inter-state matter that affects us all. The Oklahoma City Zoo has been on IDA's Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants list in the past and we have submitted complaints to the USDA for violations of the Animal Welfare Act for their dangerous breeding practices. IDA agrees that these elephants could, and should, go to a comfortable sanctuary where they can live out the rest of their lives in peace. In Oklahoma, these already beleaguered elephants would end up spending even more time either in cold weather or confined indoors in a small enclosure.

The circus won't be the same, but I don't go in for treatment of elephants from what I've seen on different t.v. shows. These elephants are smart, have feelings, and are special animals. I'm glad they don't have to live that way any longer. I've never been to a circus.
