The area they were planning on going to is in desperate need of affordable middleclass housing. Something that is the direct opposite of what happens when Amazon moves in.

Great competition for other shopping channels.
Now, think what it takes financially to start up and support such an endeavor. Someone will pay. Will they be adding to or simply redirecting existing customers for the added expense ? Any incremental increase can be costly.
When I first heard the news of 2 headquarters, I wondered about duplicative work efforts. Possibly, an ultimate split into a number of dedicated lines of business ?
I get concerned when a successful company expands and diversifies into so many lines of business. Quality control and key service indicators can suffer.

I know our area fought to get Amazon (DC area). They are coming.
And I am proud of Amazon for not wanting to PLAY in the NYC arena. Others who wanted them may now we in line for a second chance.
I am a proud Prime member. And a proud Amazon shopper.

The TV show Adam Ruins Everything really opened up my eyes about how Amazon does business...and it ruined it for me because I used to think the world of Amazon until I watched this episode...Adam Ruins Tech (Dec10, 2018).

I think I understand. People there did not want the housing market to be like Silicon Valley?? Yet, Upstate NY wants them. Confusing. @reiki604

Amazon won't build anywhere else the facilities they were planning to build in nyc because they were coming to nyc because they wanted to be in nyc. They hoped to get money from nys for it. but amazon is already in NYC without subsidies, as is google and other technology companies. my understaning is that they will continue to expand in NYC, just not the phony HQ2 project.
@vacationday we want Amazon in nyc, we don't want to subsidize it. upstate ny wants them because they are in desperate need for jobs. NYS has paid a lot of companies a lot of money to move to upsate NY, and all we have are scandal and underutilized buildings.

Love Amazon prime. They have everything and get it to you with days. Often overnight. And, if you have a return, they credit your acct as soon as they are notified it has been sent. Walmart is getting into the swing of things as well.

I am very happy with Amazon on the whole; did finally get prime and have saved so much money on shipping.
I will say, though, don't buy blindly for convenience. Some of their beauty items in particular are not that great a deal even with free shipping.( Others, way below anyone else.)
Shipping is so fast, and based on only one return, I had an immediate refund.

@bridal_diva I shop Amazon a lot and am Prime, but be careful and do comparative shopping.

Amazon would have brought high end tech jobs. The cost of living is already expensive. The average person would have been hurt financially.
