One more thing on computers - I bought my son an Acer Aspire laptop about 3 years ago for Christmas. He has had no problems with it. In fact, he was talking to some kids from the local university, and many of them said most of what they and their friends used were Acer computers. I learned that Acer is one of the largest manufacturers of laptops and notebooks, tablets in the world -- and I had never heard of them until HSN brought them on air. They have also won all kinds of awards for their products, so if I replace my Dell, it will probably be with an Acer.

I am so happy to hear you say this. I feel in Love with the Acer's I looked at...at Best buy.I like the smaller computer lap tops and theirs looked awesome. I am in the process of looking and I keep thinking about the Acer.

I've read and heard good things about Acer products; Dell and HP seem to be up and down.

I've had very good luck with my Brother printer...years of use and still working great. Lexmark used to be one of the highest-rated printers around. Haven't read up on it lately, though.

The university I referred to is a big, expensive, very well known private university - and also at the top of the heap in basketball and football circles. So I figured if so many of the kids who go there are into Acer computers, they've got to be good! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

My daughter bought my grandson an acer for his birthday. He was complaining to me that she uses it more than her own hp computer. She only paid $99 for it.

I am sure it is out of warranty by now, but did any of these issues occur while under warranty? What did tech support find? Did they try to fix it?

While there are rumors that the quality has gone downhill, I have had no issues with mine. I will likely replace it with an HP, however, as I need a computer with a backlit keyboard, and I have found HP to be the most reasonable.

I agree. I had a desk top Dell that lasted 2 years. It was a piece of JUNK and no help from Dell. We now have one Dell laptop and one HP laptop. WHY we bought another Dell is beyond me. We have trouble w the Dell laptop on and off but the HP is working fabulous and theyre both around the same age. Next time we need a laptop it will be HP ONLY!

Id like to add. I know everyone loves Apple. Well we don't. My iPad is the first one and I hardly used it. I went to go on Instagram and it says I cant get on unless I update my iPad and my son looked at it and theres no way to update the first one.lol.

Also my iPod was one of the first, plays music fine and when we got new puters we added them as it says to do. Well it will NOT download the NEW music I bought TO the iPod and I did everything it said to load it. But it wont work to load new music since we have newer laptops.

Lastly my son was ripped off numerous times by Apple for his iPhones. (and so was my daughter). They had coverage and it never covered anything and they wanted to charge them or make them get new phones (costing way too much money!) Finally my son told them to shove it (last month) and bought a brand new Gallaxy phone and they threw in a tablet. So hes done w Apple too.

More of the story, our family only will buy HP puters and anything phone wise except iPhones!

I have been buying Dell computers for 22 years mostly desktops. It is not about any brand name, but the components inside the box. I buy a laptop where all the major parts are identified by name, so I can look them up on the web. I have been very fortunate to get quality systems from Dell.

Another recommendation for Acer. I've had my laptop with very few issues for 8 years and counting......

Pretty much every computer, regardless of the "name" on the case, is now made by one of seven Asian Original Design Manufacturers (ODM's) or one of several Contract Manufacturers (CM's.) ODM's get a list of specs that the "name" wants the device to meet and a price point then the ODM designs and builds computers to meet those specs using whatever components they choose to use. CM's are given a specific list of components picked out by the "name" to be used and they simply assemble those components. Pretty much no computer "name" actually makes computers themselves. There is essentially nothing inside a Dell computer that comes from Dell anymore.

Apple laptops reportedly come from the Foxconn, Pegatron, and Quanta ODM's, while Dell laptops reportedly come from those same three ODM's and Wistron. Since so many devices come from the same ODM's you would assume they'd all perform similarly, but different "names" want different specs/price points so you get different levels of performance.

A model of a Dell laptop from one ODM may be vastly superior to a different model of a Dell laptop from a second ODM depending on the specs/price point Dell gave the ODM's to work with and the quality of the designer used by the ODM. That's why you'll hear someone rave about their Dell (or other brand of computer) while another one person considers them a waste of money. Quality can even vary within a model as the "name" may switch from one ODM to another if demand exceeds the contracted amount that the first ODM had to deliver. When that same model goes to a second ODM to meet demand the new design from the new ODM may be inferior to the first design. Even though it has the same model number it could use some/many different components with different effects on performance/reliability. Even if the same ODM makes all of a model they may swap out certain components mid-production which can alter the performance of the finished products.
