My daughter had a Dell laptop and the battery died. When she called CS they told her that they used reconditioned batteries and extended warranty or not, the battery was not covered because they only had so much life in them. After much weeping and gnashing of teeth they sent her a "new" reconditioned battery. When that one died we switched to HP. No issues yet after four years.

ODM's get a list of specs that the "name" wants the device to meet and a price point then the ODM designs and builds computers to meet those specs using whatever components they choose to use. CM's are given a specific list of components picked out by the "name" to be used and they simply assemble those components. Pretty much no computer "name" actually makes computers themselves. There is essentially nothing inside a Dell computer that comes from Dell anymore.
Apple laptops reportedly come from the Foxconn, Pegatron, and Quanta ODM's, while Dell laptops reportedly come from those same three ODM's and Wistron. Since so many devices come from the same ODM's you would assume they'd all perform similarly, but different "names" want different specs/price points so you get different levels of performance.
A model of a Dell laptop from one ODM may be vastly superior to a different model of a Dell laptop from a second ODM depending on the specs/price point Dell gave the ODM's to work with and the quality of the designer used by the ODM. That's why you'll hear someone rave about their Dell (or other brand of computer) while another one person considers them a waste of money. Quality can even vary within a model as the "name" may switch from one ODM to another if demand exceeds the contracted amount that the first ODM had to deliver. When that same model goes to a second ODM to meet demand the new design from the new ODM may be inferior to the first design. Even though it has the same model number it could use some/many different components with different effects on performance/reliability. Even if the same ODM makes all of a model they may swap out certain components mid-production which can alter the performance of the finished products.
I read about this on Google also, but didn't bother to post about it. Glad you did.
Also one name brand may own another name brand, e.g., HP owns Acer. My brother worked for Panasonic for 35 years and they made many other brands in their Japanese factories. And that goes for many other electronics.
They do the same thing with cars and have been doing so for many years.
So you don't really know what you are computing with, or what you are driving.

I was trying to find something about HP owning Acer, but could not. I know it's difficult to tell who owns who nowadays, but what I found is:
Acer is a Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics corporation headquartered in Xizhi, New Taipei City, Taiwan. Acer's products include desktop and laptop PCs, tablet computers, servers, storage devices, displays, smartphones and peripherals. It also provides e-business services to businesses, governments and consumers. In 2013 Acer was the fourth largest personal computer vendor in the world.[2
They acquired Gateway in 2007 and in 2008 acquired 75% controlling interest in Packard Bell, as well as other electronics companies.
I'm considering getting an Acer computer before too long, and would like to know the specifics of the company. If you could tell me where you found the info re HP owning them, I sure would appreciate it, because I can't find any reference to it. Thanks.

Here is the page I found. I did mix up who owned who, but as you can see, they are all pretty much interconnected. It does say Dell is just Dell and HP is just HP. It looks like Acer owns Gateway and others, and Dell owns Compaq. Interesting site, and easy to get mixed up who owns what and which is better. Hopefully it will be helpful to you.

I am very happy with Asus products since I gave up on Dell a few years back. Two laptops and a tablet, great products and customer service.

Thanks, that's pretty much what I was looking at. The same situation goes now for banks who've bought each other out, insurance companies, etc. Geez, I'm not even sure I know who owns my life insurance policy any more!
