You must have a massive yard and many flower beds for it to require that many workers for that length of time. $950 sounds like a heck of a lot. That's a job that DH does himself so I don't know what's customary around here. I might have had some water available for the workers but that's about it.
If the owner wants to be paid in cash, there's a reason behind that. It's not your business per se, how many guys it takes or what he pays his crew, but cash saves him credit card fees and bounced check losses and recovery. Plus, who knows if he's reporting it all? Is he paying taxes? If he pays his guys in cash, are they reporting it all? Is he taking out the required withholdings? I can't control what others do, but I know myself. If I knew, or suspected, that anything like that was going on, I know that would bug me and I wouldn't hire him, to begin with.

In my area of Maryland , there have been many so called " contractors " stopping at my house with a truck full of workers or calling on the phone asking us to hire them for lawn care, house cleaning , drive way paving , installing flooring and even roofing . One guy stopped by twice trying to get us to let him up on our roof . We had our roof replaced just 5 yrs ago . These so called contractors all want cash .
We tell all these people no and not to come back .

TBH having that much cash around for others to know about would make me skittish.
When I stayed at my Mom's home a few times I went to pay her lawn care guy with a check, he shook his head and said "Greens". Well, she had no Greens lying around and he was visibly irritated.
Whatever happened to paying after receiving an invoice? especially for pricey yardwork.

I pay my mowing company monthly. Its a locally owned by a family who has a couple of crews out and about. Very casual. I Zelle my payment.
First two years i tipped 100% at Christmas. Never thanked so Ive not done that again. Im not rich. If i want extra sevices i usualy have to ask three times over 2 months lol and pay extra.
After 6 years, recently, I called and said I was going to pay an extra $20 a month. ( usually only pay $100) and since they stopped billing me 2 years ago I had no idea if I had been paying correctly or not and I know the economy has become difficult. The wife was so confused at first lol. Im just trying to be a good customer and fair. They are not perfect but obviously they do not ask for much.
Im still not tipping again lol.

My yard/handyman is independent, I don't usually tip him but if it's a big job I do so. I had top soil and mulch delivered last week, had him dump it in different spot than the company usually does-which at the driveway. He dumped it in neat piles close to where we needed it so I tipped him.

The days of sending a client an invoice for yard work are over. I'm sure it still exists, but it's the exception, not the rule.
Yard people don't want to wait to get paid and don't want to have to chase their money down. I don't blame them one bit.
Unless you're a commercial business, I don't see why you would expect the yard guy to mail you an invoice.
If you don't have cash, pay with Cash App, Zelle, or another form of instant payment.

I don't tip yard work. They have a price--I pay it. We will give a bonus at the end of the mowing season when the yard is cleaned up but that's it.
I tip delivery people well. They are working hard, buying gas, they deserve it.
You make money, you need to be paying taxes on it. Simple concept.

I still get invoices from my regular gardener, pool service, etc. and send a check.
When I have had the tree service out periodically then I find out from the office how much it is and give the kid a check. It's not that difficult to do a mobile deposit if need be.
