I Want To Adopt A Senior Dog

from a shelter because I'm a senior & I don't want a dog to outlive me. I wonder about 2 things: first can a senior dog who's lived all his life in a shelter make a good pet & second, do shelters put their senior dogs to sleep? I am having trouble finding one. Where I live, breed rescue groups are more than 100 miles away. Our local animal shelter has only younger dogs & puppies & the same is true of the Humane Society. There aren't even any in the ads in the paper for senior dogs.
