Re: I REALLY want to go out...

We were outside all of the time in weather like this when we were young. Now they've become nanny's and warn about everything.

If you want to go to the gym, go. Bundle up to keep warm. My son is skiing right now. And we're on Lake Michigan with a Winter Storm Warning.

What am I missing? I used to live where the temps in winter were typically below 0 - as much as 20 to 30 below. And we didn't even know what the wind chill was. We went to work and school etc.

What is so different now? Is this because of global warming or something that everyone is freaking out?

I agree, Dagna. I grew up in the snow belt along Lake Erie. It's winter for crying out loud, snow and cold are to be expected.

The blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service is what's different about this. Most who live in western NY do not mind the snow and cold and are used to it. I've lived in many cold climates and western New Yorkers are a very hardy bunch. Where I live it's not unusual to see 250 to 300 inches of snow a year. Being careful in 60-70 mph winds and sub zero temperatures with snow is wise in my opinion. A lot of the "freaking out" comes from officials who wish to avoid tragedy and broadcasters going a little crazy because of the unusual conditions. There are many in this area who do not have adequate winter clothes, including children who must walk to school. I don't see where it's freaking out to want them to be safe and call school off until the weather passes. I've seen too many tragedies in brutal cold conditions and feel that it's okay to err on the side of caution when conditions warrant. I grew up in upstate New Hampshire where it's a lot colder than it is here...I went skiing when it was 10, 20 below zero and got frostbite for my foolishness of insisting on being out in it.

The last true blizzard we had here was in '97.

I LOVE the snow...but not when the white-outs lead to total gridlock.

Many years ago, back around Thanksgiving, I almost was stranded on the Thruway commuting home from Rochester. I finally made it off...and made it to a gas station. I had left Rochester at 3PM and reached the gas station at 8 PM. The station had run out of gas...I ended up having to abandon my car and get a room at a fleabag motel. I was stuck for two days at the hotel. My car was hit by a plow ($6000 damage) and had been towed along with hundreds of other cars. State troopers were nice, they drove me around to parking lots until we found my car.

I was luckier than many...other people were stuck on the Thruway...people actually died.

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

I have been out once in 10 days..lol. I can go out, but the cold isn't good for my health issues The other days I was in due to snow and or ice. Most schools here are closed and people are laughing because we all walked MILES in cold, snow, sleet, rain. But I think its good they closed. Rather safe than sorry. Unfortunately kids will be making this up at the end of the school year so that's the downfall!

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

When I was an elementary school teacher in the 1990s in Anchorage, Alaska we did not cancel outside recess until the wind chill was lower than-10.

In our district, they build in 6 snowdays into the calendar, no making up necessary unless they go over the 6 days. Last year, they used them all up! We've used 3 already this school year.

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

Here schools in the area of Ga. where I live are on a 2 hour delay today and tomorrow because of the cold. I grew up in Pa. so I find this amusing.

I think it's the cold coupled with the snow. There have been tons of accidents and car fatalities around here. The roads are like ice. There was a city plow truck that slid off the road into a ditch. A 90-year-old woman died in Ohio when her car got stuck in the snow and she tried to walk back home. They found her face down in the snow. It's not safe for kids to walk to school when it's -40 out.

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

We had a bad Buffalo storm in 2000 that hit in the afternoon.

School buses were stranded...people opened their homes to entire buses of kids, who had to stay overnight.

That was a DISASTER!

Back then kids didn't have cell phones like they do now...and parents were frantic.

Good thing I called...due to the driving ban, the gym is closed.

That would have been a REAL workout - walking 4 miles roundtrip in snowbanks!
