Re: I REALLY want to go out...

What am I missing? I used to live where the temps in winter were typically below 0 - as much as 20 to 30 below. And we didn't even know what the wind chill was. We went to work and school etc.

What is so different now? Is this because of global warming or something that everyone is freaking out?

You would go walking in minus 21 degree weather? Seriously?

I agree, Dagna. I grew up in the snow belt along Lake Erie. It's winter for crying out loud, snow and cold are to be expected.

I believe the OP said it was minus 2 not 21 - and yes I have walked to school in that temp.

It looks like she said -2, not -21.

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

When I was growing up, our local ice rink was an outdoor rink.

We skated there in all kinds of weather.

Now, of course, it is enclosed and heated!

Wegmans would be a two mile walk each way...I think I will settle for a stroll to the corner store...but I'm going to wait a bit...hopefully they will have gotten deliveries and be more stocked than yesterday. Tuesday is the regular bread delivery day at my local store...

The blizzard warning issued by the National Weather Service is what's different about this. Most who live in western NY do not mind the snow and cold and are used to it. I've lived in many cold climates and western New Yorkers are a very hardy bunch. Where I live it's not unusual to see 250 to 300 inches of snow a year. Being careful in 60-70 mph winds and sub zero temperatures with snow is wise in my opinion. A lot of the "freaking out" comes from officials who wish to avoid tragedy and broadcasters going a little crazy because of the unusual conditions. There are many in this area who do not have adequate winter clothes, including children who must walk to school. I don't see where it's freaking out to want them to be safe and call school off until the weather passes. I've seen too many tragedies in brutal cold conditions and feel that it's okay to err on the side of caution when conditions warrant. I grew up in upstate New Hampshire where it's a lot colder than it is here...I went skiing when it was 10, 20 below zero and got frostbite for my foolishness of insisting on being out in it.

Re: I REALLY want to go out...

I saw NY was under blizzard warning yesterday, I'd stay in.

Besides, the wind is horrendous.

It's relative. I grew up in Upstate NY where minus 2 was a warm winter's day. Now that I live in the South, minus 2 means staying inside wearing thermal underwear.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.
