I Know It's Only TV, but.....

it makes me shake my head when these renovation shows destroy kitchen cabinets, islands, etc., when such items could reused in the garage or in the laundry room or given to Habitat for Humanity resale stores, or even put on the curb with a "free" sign. I don't watch these shows to see someone swinging a sledge hammer---I want to see ideas.

On the other hand, it's good to see how it is possible to replace things that need replacing and sometimes it is cheaper, easier or better to do that.

It just gives you ideas and options about which way to go.

@wismiss

I've written this before, but I'll repeat myself.

My husband is a builder and has been most of his life.  Also an expert brick mason.  He's built entire homes (ours) and every kind of construction you can name, including kitchen rennovations.

He's said repeatedly that these shows are just stupid.  He does not ever destroy anything like that with a sledge hammer before starting the job.

It is not necessary and it makes everything that follows more difficult.

Having watched him work, I know that what goes on in these shows is just misleading and wasteful.

Wanted to add, that it's often not just about saving what they take down, it's that it's stupid to make such a huge mess destroying things.

If things have to be taken out, they don't beat them off the walls with huge hammers.

I watch regularly the reno shows.  Many times they do salvage and donate.  However most of the time the cabnets are not of good quality to salvage.

many of them actually donate the cabinets and other furniture when they're in good enough condition to be reused.

I hope they do donate a lof these things.  I watch a lot of these kinds of shows and the majority of time the kitchens, bathrooms, etc., that they all hate and say are awful and out of style, etc., are way better and modern than what I currently have!  I know it's t.v., but I end up thinking --- sheesh, these people are so spoiled!

Property Brothers come to mind.

Hope there comes a day their ego lets them put down the sledge hammer.

I think I remember maybe ONE episode where the family requested the cabinets be saved, and they did.

Somebody can always use something.

Then there are the shows like Rehab Addict.   I swear Nicole Curtis would save sawdust!

Get DIY and watch some really great rehab shows like Barnwood Builders, Stone House Revival, Restored, Salvage Dogs, etc

I agree with you until I see the money these  people spend on a house.

If I spend $500k on a  new house, it better be top of the line!

It is just tv and the shows have to be entertaining and fanciful to get people to watch.  No one wants to see a design show where they talk about reselling the perfectly good kitchen cabinets or dragging stuff out to the curb to sit in hopes that some scavenger will happen along and take it.  There are neighborhoods and towns that don't even allow you to park stuff on the sidewalk.
