I want to thank everyone for their words of advice.
When my manager gets back from hip replacement surgery, I plan on asking her what I need to work on to be a better candidate to be considered for promotion.
Also, I can always promote/transfer to another locale, so that is something for me to think about, too.
At times like this, I am reminded of Garth Brooks song "Unanswered Prayers".
"Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayers Remember when you're talkin' to the man upstairs That just because he doesn't answer doesn't mean he don't care Some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers"
I have a lot to think about.

@Anonymous032819 In fact the more I think about it the madder I get. I mean come on, right before a major holiday - the type of news that one hopes they can share with friends and family. Just a double blow considering that you are grieving. Wow, I'm burning mad now!!!!

You can be mad for me.

i'm sorry to hear this. i'm a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, though, and i have to believe that there is something for you up ahead.

As a former manager and also a career counselor, the telephone interview you had was not wasted effort: it was great practice / preparation for subsequent interviews either phone or face-to-face.
It is always disappointing to lose out on an opportunity, even one you didn’t want ( I know this first hand, lol ).
Since the boss had the eye out for a “ moldable “ candidate, boss got what was wanted / needed. You now have the opportunity to demonstrate team spirit and work well with the selected individual. Remember, you don’t know who is observing you !!!! There will be future doors opening, be ready.
As for not being a “yes person”, your reputation for honesty is an asset. When someone wants the truth, you will be the person they turn to. Since no one wants to fail, they will depend on you so they can succeed. As they advance, you may be the asset they bring along !
Respect in the workplace is hard earned but worth it. Too, you can live with person in the mirror !!!
Good Luck and be ready when that door opens !

maybe the person who got the job had a better attendance record.

I always believe things happen for a reason. Maybe this position wouldn't have worked out for you. Hopefully, there will be another opportunity.

I’m really sorry you didn’t get the job but know that something better awaits you.
Recently we had a position open up and 3 people in our area applied and interviewed. One of the girls really wanted the job but didn’t get it.
Well a few weeks later she applied for another job that paid twice as much and she got it. The girl that got the first job, hates it. She has to deal with all the drama and complaints and has had it. She is so stressed.
Im rooting for you, your window will open.

Oh, rats😕
Like you said earlier, @Anonymous032819, this interview was good practice for the next opportunity.

It's been my experience the higher ups know who they are going to promote in advance, the interviews are all show so they are are not questioned. Hiring is sometime more fair all things being equal, but if someone already in the system has a friend or relative they have the leg up so to speak. Good luck next time.
