@esmerelda Agree. While my understanding is that Treasury checks are valid for 12 months, these checks to the deceased need to be accounted for so that the $$ can be re-allocated for other uses.
I cannot imagine even beginning to wonder if one should keep a check that is not made out to you (you being generic and not to the OP or anyone else in this situation).
