@sunshine45, I'm so sorry for your loss. How devastating.

I hate flying for a variety of reasons! You're treated like cattle, the seats are very uncomfortable even for a short person, it's a PITA to get up to use the restroom, the food is terrible, and the air is unhealthy. Then there is the whole issue of luggage! Last time we went on vacation they lost my husband's suitcase (fortunately it was found a day later)
Flying though is the only way to realistically see my mother. She's in S Florida and I'm in Pa. I can't drive long distances and the one time I did drive it took almost two days! It only takes 3 hours or so to fly.
My nephew is getting married next summer in Ca so again if I want to attend we're going to have to fly.

There may be some here who haven't heard my story, so I will state it (again) briefly.
DH and I were flying a cross-country trip starting out at early a.m. from Michigan to Denver and then on to our destination in AZ. This was in 2001, and yes, the date was September 11. We were a couple of hours into our flight when the pilot came on and asked urgently for our attention. He stated that the FAA was grounding all planes from US air and all planes have been ordered to land immediately at the nearest available airfield. In addition, we were to put on our seat belts, and no one, repeat no one, was to move from their seats FOR ANY REASON. Anyone doing so WOULD BE STOPPED. We were then told we would be receiving further information when it was available.
I did very little flying and my DH flew a lot. I turned to him and asked what he thought was happening, rather casually. He had a funny look on his face, very unusual for him. He said he thought either war had been declared or some other state of emergency had been declared. Whatever it was, it was not good.
I won't go into much more detail, except to say that when we got to the nearest airport which was Chicago, it was jam packed with planes and we were there for a very long time until we deplaned. There is a lot more to my story, but I am just very, very happy to be alive with everything that went on that day.
I did not fly for a long, long time after that. And stil do not fly unless absolutely necessary.

I will fly anyway, I refused to be terrorize by these animals.
But what about yesterday campus knifing????? They are all here and multiplying.
Should be afraid to go out, to the malls, schools, theaters, supermarkets??!! That's the issue!
We need strong borders, strong army, strong decisive leaders, and we need to grow a pair to stand up to this plague.

It doesn't have to come through the check point in order to get on the plane.
And what's to stop someone from texting in their car, crossing the centerline and plowing into you head on?

You're absolutely right but your chances of surviving a car crash are better than surviving a plane crash. I can't count the number of times I have flown and have had a couple of scary flights. I am and always have been a white knuckle flier. I hate being confined in a small space 35,000 feet above the ground. I envy those who have no fear of flying.
my father was a traveler who flew a number of times a year all over the world from the time he was 26 years old.....never had any problems.....
11 years ago he was a mile away from home in his car, headed out on a friday evening, and he was killed by a drunk driver.
That is awful. I am so sorry.

Nothing is as simple as securing a border or building a wall. The Soviets did it in Berlin during the early 1960s. Walls shut people in but they can't keep ideas out.

Anyone here know anything about the st*bbings (no fatalities, thank goodness) at Merced University? I caught a glimpse of the news, but not the entire thing. Anyone know who/what/etc, the perpetrator was? Updated: See my next post.
