I'm no help. I love Wal Mart and shop there for certain things and have for 20 years. Even now they are easing away from China goods.

Yes, I could shop there as long as the store has had no other crimes . The 2017 shooter is not at large as you said he killed himself.

Yes, I could shop there.
A pharmacy I sometimes go to had an armed guard shoot and kill a guy who was also armed and trying to steal drugs at gun point. The thief made it out into the parking lot after he was shot and died.
I arrived to shop there right after it happened and the police wouldn't allow me or anyone else into the parking lot. Emergency vehicles were everywhere. I heard on the news that night what happened. I still shop there.
We also have a mom and pop bar/ restaurant in the town where I grew up. The owners lived upstairs. One evening two armed men came in to rob the place. The owners teenage son came down the stairs in the back because he heard noise and he was shot and killed.
There is a gas station/convenience store not too far from me. The cashier was killed there during a robbery several years ago.
People die everyday and everywhere. I do get creeped out in hospitals wondering if anyone died in that room or bed.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 Yes, it was a horrible incident, but it has passed and since I do not know anyone involved, I'd be able to go inside.

Start with little steps - - go to this store with your best support buddy - your daughter. Take a short shopping list on your first trip - next month take a regular list of purchases - with DD. = of course
After several trips to that store...it will become easier and easier.

Unpleasant things happen in life but I would have no problem shopping there. Why do you allow that incident to have so much power and control over you for five years, especially when you weren't even directly involved? That's just silly, IMO. When I was a kid, a neighbor down the street died in a house fire. The damage was repaired and some months later, our neighbor friends across the street bought that house, moved in, and lived there for many years. I played in that house, in the room where the fire occurred, all the time. When DH and I were only married a few years we were living in a condo. Our next door neighbors were murdered in a very horrific manner. It's highly likely that I unknowingly saw the murderer(s) when I passed them in the hall. We didn't immediately put our unit up for sale. 🤷♀️

@CrazyKittyLvr2 wrote:@kitcat51 Huh !! I certainly don't see myself as part of the tragedy.
I can go up and down the aisles and imagine the horror of that night
I don't understand why you are holding on so tightly to a tragedy. Your choice to do so, though.
Either decide to see shopping there differently .... like trying to support a local business so it doesn't close, or make arrangements to get your food elsewhere. I don't see any other choices for you.
BTW .... unless it's part of history, we have NO IDEA what events might have occurred decades or even centuries ago on anywhere we go. I've driven cross country five times in my life, and while driving I often wondered what might have happened in this place ... or that place ... or over there. Might there have been serious American Indian battles here? Might this have been a popular mating spot for dinosaurs? Was this a popular route for settlers in wagon trains?
Both good and bad things happen everywhere, but we all need to move on.

@CrazyKittyLvr2 I cannot give you an answer because I haven't had an experience close to what you had. For whatever reason it affected you and made a lasting impression. Feeling confined with no easy exit is not a comfortable feeling either.
I used to feel the same about Walmart but started to do curb side pick for many items and have been pleased and don't have to go in. Your feelings are yours and since you have found an alternative you are happy with problem solved. You don't have to go in, your choice and your feelings are valid.

Yeah, I don't know for sure. I think I might be able to. But I absolutely cannot dictate how you should feel. You should follow how you feel and I don't think you should feel bad if you find yourself unable to go there.
It's really a drag that your choices are so few, though, so there might come a time when you have to try again.

I think we are all affected by tragedies in a different way. I would personally feel the same as you and would not go back to the store.
