A CAT 5 Hurricane...909 mb!
Forecast models - The hurricane is also suppose to GROW IN SIZE over the next couple of days to encompass most of the state of Florida.
O - M - G
It also looks like Tampa & Sarasota are in the bullseye for landfall. They still can't pinpoint the exact landfall location yet. The dangerous storm surge pretty much will be along most of the west coast of Florida.
I lived through Hurricane Gloria in 1985...and it was not nearly as intense as Hurricane Milton.
To compare...
I also remember Hurricane Andrew in 1992...highest wind speed was 174 mph.
I'm updating the thread title...sustained winds are now up to 180! Additionally, the storm surge potential has been updated for Tampa/Sarasota to 10-15 FEET!

My son and daughter in law flew to Pittsburgh Friday for the Steelers game yesterday and they flew into Fort Meyers Fla this morning on their way back here to St. Louis. They had about a 3 hr delay in taking off due to the weather warnings and he texted me the warning notice they received on their phones " Emergency Alert to Lee County: Evacuate by Tuesday evening from Zone A and B due to Hurricane Melton "
My prayers to all in the Florida area and beyond who will be affected by these storms. The weatherman here on the news this morning said it's a Cat 5 but they anticipate it to drop to Cat 3 by the time it hits land. That's still a devastating storm !! Again praying for everyone to stay safe.

I have several friends in Fla...they are already starting to leave.
This is just terrible two in a row, and still so many suffering from the last one.
As @Susan Louise said, I lived through Gloria, and a few others about 10 or 12? years ago, I don't even recall the names but we didn't have power for over a week. Hurricaines are rarer for us but at that time I believe we had two, two yrs in a row.
Luckily, we weren't flooded out, and our homes and trees were in tact. Many neighbors were under water, some shoreline homes, seawalls, floating away. I live on CT shoreline but 2nd floor condo. At that time mom was still alive and in her home, more inland...we stayed with her, in case she needed anything, we were all together in her home.
I wish this bad forecast would change.
I'm about to go out today to buy some needed items to donate...I heard of a truck, or two or three...from some local CT company heading down south with donations...they're collecting until tomorrow.

@amyb @LindaSal I lived on the Connecticut shoreline too. My home town is Branford. I lived there til 2000 when I got married - moved to Nebraska.
One thought that stands out is the state helped folks cope with the situation by opening up the Durham Fair ASAP. I still have the ribbons from baked goods and needlework I entered. ![]()

@amyb I'm in RI and remember Hurricane Gloria, believe it or not that one was in 1985.
I remember as my son was born in 85 and was an infant at the time. My daughter was only 1 1/2 years old. We had no power for a few days and I recall my DH lighting up the grill so I could warm a pan of water to heat his formula up! Then Bob was another bad one in 1991 but I think the one you are thinking about might have been Irene in 2011?
We lived way out in the woods and lost power for a week and had blocked roads with fallen trees. Jeez, been through some crazy ones here too and don't even get me going on the blizzards! But all in all I'll take New England storms any day of the week before what the south has to endure!

Prayers for all. 🙏
Climate change is real and it's here. Oceans have warmed around the world which
accelerates hurricanes.

I hope anyone in its path got out of the area as soon as they were notified of the potential seriousness of this storm. To wait and see is not a good decision.
